Curried Favors: Family Recipes from South India, by Maya Kaimal Macmillan

This engaging cookbook, the first to feature the tropical dishes of South India, demystifies the cuisine and offers more than 100 recipes with light, tropical flavors and simple preparations, along with sumptuous photographs of the food and the region.

Challenging the stereotypes that Indian curries are rich and heavy, difficult to prepare, and made with hard-to-find ingredients, this book introduces the light, tropical tastes of south India with accessible ingredients and simple methods. Adapting these south Indian recipes for the average kitchen, the author familiarizes the home cook with this lesser-known cuisine.

An abundance of coconut and seafood, along with a host of exotic fruits and vegetables, including fresh hot chilies, distinguishes the curries of south India from those of north India. The focus is the traditional southern fare-dishes such as Rava Masala Dosa (wheat crepes stuffed with potato curry), Sambar (spicy stew of legumes and vegetables), and fish Aviyal (chunks of fish in an aromatic sauce of coconut and tamarind)-which is harder to find in restaurants outside of India. North Indian classics, also family favorites, like Lamb Korma, Tandoori Chicken, and Spinach Paneer are included.

With everything from appetizers to desserts, this is an excellent introduction to Indian cooking. The author has an extraordinary talent for explaining unfamiliar cooking techniques, and specially commissioned full-color photographs provide helpful visual cues for preparing a wide variety of dishes.

The inspired recipes, purposeful photographs, extensive notes on ingredients, practical menu ideas, and useful source list make it a primer on Indian cooking as well as a significant exploration of regional specialties.

Amazon.com Review
Few cooks know their subject as personally as Maya Kaimal MacMillan who in Curried Favors focuses on the less familiar cooking of Southern India, particularly the province of Kerala, her family's original home. "Curry," she informs us, correctly refers to a range of dishes calling for differing blends of spices known as "masalas." Coconut, curry leaves, and mustard seeds are particularly key in the wet masalas often used by her aunt and others in Southern India. MacMillan offers intelligent substitutions, where necessary. Curried Favors provides detailed directions so you can comfortably try dishes such as Idli, Yogurt, Aviyals, Kichadis, and Pachadis as well as more familiar northern favorites such as Khormas and Biriyanis. Something of a mini-coffee table book, Curried Favors would be a good gift, thanks to its handsome presentation and MacMillan's conversational commentary.

Amazing Indian Food, Easy to Follow Recipes
By drdebs
My recipe for success: After you receive this book, make a list of all the spices and cooking stuff (like Tamarind Paste) that you don't have. Go shopping. Come home and start making the best Indian food you have ever tasted. Begin inviting your friends over for the best Indian food they have ever tasted. Enjoy.
This wonderful cookbook is a treat in many ways. There are beautiful pictures, clear explanations of techniques, detailed descriptions of products you need (and substitutions if you can't find curry leaves, like me!), and accurate estimates of time needed for preparation and cooking. And that doesn't even take into account the marvelous food that you will rather effortlessly produce!
Indian food is really starting to become popular in the US, and in Europe South Indian food (the kind featured in this book) is the trendiest wave of Indian cuisine. I find the cuisine of South India less heavy and "brighter" than many Mughal dishes, and I think that even those of you who haven't particularly liked Indian food in the past will gobble up the food in this book. Some of my favorites include Shrimp Thiyal (yummy coconut-shrimp curry), Lamb Korma (admittedly a Mughal dish, and you can easily substitute chicken), and the spinach Dhal (green split peas with spinach and flakes of coconut).

Great South Indian Cookbook for Beginners
By MWDC
This is a really great cookbook. My husband's family is from Kerala, so I wanted a cookbook to help me learn how to cook like his mother. This is it. I bought this and a couple of other South Indian cookbooks, but I never even use the others because this has everything I need in it. I come back to it again and again and never go wrong. Everything is delicious. The cookbook includes a great variety of meat and seafood dishes in addition to the usual vegetarian South Indian suspects. The recipes are dependably very good, and generally quite easy. Importantly, the recipes are very well written and easy to follow (unlike my mother-in-law's instructions when I ask her for recipes ... ). Finally, the recipes appear to be authentic: when my mother-in-law looked through this book, she has commented that the recipes are all very similar to the recipes she uses. I would not hesitate to cook something out of this cookbook for my in-laws, the ultimate critics.

Absolutely wonderful
By Mel W
I've made many of the recipes in this cookbook and they are all delicious. The flavors are outstanding, and the recipes are easy to follow and typically quite simple. This is a staple in our home -- I make at least one meal a week from it. (My favorite: the spinach pachadi. I never used to like cooked spinach but I could eat this all day!)

The only complaint I have is that the proteins do not always end up tender. Leaving the lamb and spinach curry on simmer for an extra 40 minutes, for instance, leaves you with much more tender lamb. But otherwise I would not change a thing.

The Sergeant's Cat (Amsterdam Cops), by Janwillem Van De Wetering

A collection of 13 short stories spanning two decades in the lives of van de Wetering's Amsterdam Cops

Amsterdam isn’t exactly a hotbed of violent crime, but wrongdoing does occur, and the most bizarre cases tend to be passed to Grijpstra and de Gier. In one they investigate the death of a handsome oceanographer whose corpse is found amidst his tanks of shiny living mussels. In another they strong-arm a brutal crime lord whose henchman threatens the sergeant’s cat. Yet another leads them to uncover a most unusual murder weapon: a chocolate Easter bunny. With the curious blend of wit and the macabre readers have come to expect from the pen of Janwillem van de Wetering, the Amsterdam Cops have a way of seeing to it that justice, ultimately, is done.

From Publishers Weekly
Eight of the stories in this collection feature the author's imperturbable and popular characters, Amsterdam policemen Adjutant Grijpstra and Sergeant de Gier. Dealing with thuggish drug dealers, erudite academicians and everyday businessmen, the homicide detectives perform at their cognitive best, sometimes as gloomy as a cloudy day, sometimes sunnily good-humored. Many of these stories, including the smoothly chilling "There Goes Ravelaar" and the lighthearted "Houseful of Mussels," about an oceanographer who, hoping to make a fortune growing mussels, didn't pay enough attention to his love-life, have already appeared in Ellery Queen's Magazine. Six more stories have different settings and characters: two in lands of the East, recalling van de Wetering's interest in Zen Buddhism; two in the Netherlands; one featuring the willing victim of a beautiful vampire; and two, one a dire science fiction tale, set in Maine, where the author now lives. These are vintage van de Wetering storiesdry and wise, pared of all sentiment and unfailingly entertaining.

Review
Praise for Janwillem van de Wetering

"Masterly Zen mysteries."
—The New York Times Book Review

“Before he’s done, van de Wetering will have his say on ghettos, pornography, capitalism, est, Gurdjieff, and zero . . . The first modernist detective. To row on his dream canal, to be followed by his symbolic turtle, is to be more than disconcerted; it is to be ambushed.”
—Vanity Fair

“Engaging . . . The policemen are as quirky and complicated as the criminals.”
—The Washington Post

“What Simenon might have done if Albert Camus had sublet his skull.”
—John Leonard

VAN DE WETERING'S COLLECTION OF 14 SHORT STORIES DESERVES AN "A" RATING
By David R. Eastwood
THE SERGEANT'S CAT AND OTHER STORIES (1987) by Janwillem van de Wetering (Dutch, 1931-2008) contains 14 short stories, 8 of them Police Procedural mysteries set in Amsterdam, featuring his series detectives Adjutant Grujpstra and Sergeant de Gier. There are no Fair-Play Puzzle mysteries, and 6 of the stories are set elsewhere and generally deal with very different subjects. Most of these 14 stories are very good, and several of them are excellent.

Following the sequence of the Table of Contents, the stories are "There Goes Ravelaar" (first published in ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE, Jan. 1985), "Six This, Six That" (EQMM, July 1985), "The Deadly Egg" (EQMM, Mar. 1979), "Sure, Blue, and Dead, Too" (EQMM, June 1983), "The Sergeant's Cat" (EQMM Aug. 1983), "The Machine Gun and the Mannequin" (EQMM, July 15, 1982), "Houseful of Mussels" (EQMM, Apr. 1985), "Letter Present" (EQMM, Feb. 1986), "A Tasty Tidbit" (EQMM, Apr. 1984), "A Great Sight" (mystery anthol. TOP CRIME, 1983), "A Tale with an End" (1987), "Jacob Sanders' Final Solution" (1987), "The Yoga Yo-Yo" (1987), and "The New Disciple" (PARABOLA MAGAZINE, Summer 1984).

In my judgement the best 4 stories are "Six This, Six That," "The Machine Gun and the Mannequin," "Houseful of Mussels" (all three featuring cases of Grijpstra and de Gier), and "The New Disciple" (a story with Zen implications, set in Japan; not incidentally, Janwillem van de Wetering, as a young man, studied Zen in Japan and wrote 2 very interesting books about his experiences during that period).

Two stories I judged to be somewhat weak are "There Goes Ravelaar" (where Grijpstra and de Gier seem to fail) and "A Tale with an End" (a dystopian science fiction story warning us to take better care of our planet). The fantasy-horror story "Jacob Sanders' Final Solution" (written as the final diary entry of a doomed genius--a young Jewish Dutch boy at the start of World War II--telling about his relationship with a female vampire) was not to my taste.

If I were giving this collection of stories a letter grade, it would be a strong "A".

Amsterdam Cop Rules
By Dr. Poo
These short stories set in Holland and Maine give a unique view into the "Dutch" perspective toward policing and government in general. Janwillem's deft style and his characters introspective personalities make the reader long to be in the wicked city of Amsterdam.

Review
"Where did ecocriticism spring from? What directions has it taken on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond? What have been its key debates? What are its most radical strands that should take environmentally aware literary criticism into the future? Economically and elegantly, Lawrence Buell develops an astutely judged overview of a richly diverse but crucially important movement in literary studies. A leading practitioner in the field, Buell reveals how his own work has been influenced by the key debates and identifies the challenges for us all, writers and readers, local neighbours and global species, in facing the future our literary culture mediates and influences." Terry Gifford, author of Pastoral (1999) and The Unreliable Mushrooms (poetry, 2003).

"A much needed overview of a vital new field, The Future of Environmental Criticism captures the ecocritical movement’s present state of dynamic metamorphosis as it opens into post-humanism and ecofeminism, engages poststructural theory and environmental justice, and tests out alliances with various scientific fields and critical science studies in an increasingly international context. Nobody could accomplish this task better than Lawrence Buell, whose earlier books The Environmental Imagination and Writing for an Endangered World have become defining works for the environmental turn in literary scholarship. The previous works were primarily American in focus, while the new one begins in an Anglo-American context and broadens to a global literary scope. This latest volume completes an indispensable trilogy." Louise Westling, University of Oregon

“Buell (Harvard) is one of the US’s major voices on environmental criticism-.-a fairly recent area of literary and cultural studies known as “ecocriticism.” Several recent works have offered suggestions about how this movement or approach can be defined, but none addresses the subject so broadly, so authoritatively, and in such precise and carefully considered terms as this one does- Buell helped establish the terms for humanistic environmental writing with The Environmental Imagination (CR, Sep’95, 33-0121) and Writing for an Endangered World (CH, Nov01., 39-1386), and he perceives the present study as a “roadmap of trends, emphases, and controversies within green literary studies more generally.’ Comprising five brief chapters, all accessible and extraordinarily well informed, the book starts with a history of environmental criticism and writing; moves to a consideration of the relevant major writers involved in complicating its issues; considers its impact in terms of ethics and gender and of the judiciary and politics; and finally looks at its future, The glossary, full notes, and extended bibliography make it clear that the book’s main thrust is definitional, though Buell sees the study as more ‘essayistic” than definitive, Summing Up: Essential: All academic libraries.” T. Loe, SUNY Oswego

“Buell’s survey, framed by chapters about the emergence and possible future development of ecocriticism, organizes its material through a focus on issues of literary realism and representation in their relation to nature (chapter 2); the central role of place, space, and imagination for ecocritical thought (chapter 3); and a discussion of politics and ethics in ecocriticism that ranges from deep ecology to ecofeminism and environmental justice (chapter 4). These broad but well chosen categories allow Buell to cover an enormous range of creative and theoretical material that he discusses with the encompassing mastery and insight that readers of his two earlier works on ecocriticism … have come to expect.”
Contemporary Literature

"This is an important beginning that shows how the future of the book lies in the past." Travis V. Mason, Canadian Literature 191

“An extremely methodical, accessible, and timely introduction to the field of environmental criticism for specialists and non-specialists alike, a teasing insight into ecocriticism at work, and an excellent exposition of the development and evolution of the discipline in its most recent manifestations.”
Ruth Glynn, University of Bristol, Modern Language Review

From the Back Cover
This manifesto summarizes the disparate critical practices that constitute “ecocriticism.” Lawrence Buell, one of the world’s leading theorists in ecocriticism, traces the ecocritical movement back to its roots in the 1970s, through its coalescence into a recognizable entity in the early 1990s, to its diversification and proliferation today. He shows how, from an initial focus on such genres as nature writing and nature poetry, ecocriticism has come to take all of literary history and discourse as its arena; and he addresses questions currently facing the discipline, such as: Why has the interest in environmental literary and cultural studies so quickly increased? Can the nature-preservation emphasis of first-wave ecocriticism be reconciled with second-wave concerns with issues of environmental justice? What is the meaning of “place” in a globalizing world? And how do aesthetic, ethical, and political concerns interact and collide in ecocritical work? Finally, Buell looks to the future of ecocriticism, predicting that discourses of the environment will become a permanent part of literary and cultural studies.

About the Author
Lawrence Buell is Professor of English at Harvard University. He is best known for his two previous books on environmental criticism, The Environmental Imagination (1995) and Writing for an Endangered World (2001). His book on Emerson (2003) was also widely admired.

Great Overview & Bibliography!
By jessbcuz
This text, by an established eco-critic of literature, does a wonderful job surveying the whole of ecocriticism, and the environmental literature movement. From introducing major works and collections, to important key and pioneering figures, Buell provides the reader with a solid foundation of the different factions, philosophies, and agendas that are enmeshed under that one umbrella term.

He is careful to consider American, British, and other ecological works and scholars, showing how they work against and with each other in various ways.
One of the most helpful visuals he gives in understanding the diversity of this movement is his idea of two axes. Left to right axis has the following poles: ecocentrism & anthropocentric ethics. Top to bottom axis: health of physical environment & social welfare or interhuman equity. Eco-criticism, he continues, can land anywhere on this axis, giving an idea of the tensions and divergences of the critical stance as a whole.

Although this is a great "introductory" book, it also has a wonderful bibliography that I am using extensively to fuel my own research. As added bonuses this book is a smooth read (oh, such a relief in academia), has a great index, and even a somewhat useful glossary.

A positive-themed manifesto of means to balance differing agendas into a more unified, and therefore stronger movement
By Midwest Book Review
The Future Of Environmental Criticism: Environmental Crisis And Literary Imagination is a scholarly summary of the distinct critical practices that constitute "ecocriticism" today. Written by one of the world's leading theorists, who traces the ecocritical movement to its roots in the 1970's and its coalescence in the 1990's, The Future Of Environmental Criticism Asks such bold questions as: Why has interest in environmental literary and cultural studies risen so rapidly in recent times? Can the emphasis upon preserving nature of earlier ecocriticism be successfully reconciled with later ecocritical issues of environmental justice? The Future Of Environmental Criticism draws from past and present reality to predict the directions in which future ecocritical movements will flow, and offers a positive-themed manifesto of means to balance differing agendas into a more unified, and therefore stronger movement.

John F. Kennedy: The American Presidents Series: The 35th President, 1961-1963, by Alan Brinkley

The young president who brought vigor and glamour to the White House while he confronted cold war crises abroad and calls for social change at home

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was a new kind of president. He redefined how Americans came to see the nation's chief executive. He was forty-three when he was inaugurated in 1961―the youngest man ever elected to the office―and he personified what he called the "New Frontier" as the United States entered the 1960s.

But as Alan Brinkley shows in this incisive and lively assessment, the reality of Kennedy's achievements was much more complex than the legend. His brief presidency encountered significant failures―among them the Bay of Pigs fiasco, which cast its shadow on nearly every national-security decision that followed. But Kennedy also had successes, among them the Cuban Missile Crisis and his belated but powerful stand against segregation.

Kennedy seemed to live on a knife's edge, moving from one crisis to another―Cuba, Laos, Berlin, Vietnam, Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama. His controversial public life mirrored his hidden private life. He took risks that would seem reckless and even foolhardy when they emerged from secrecy years later.

Kennedy's life, and his violent and sudden death, reshaped our view of the presidency. Brinkley gives us a full picture of the man, his times, and his enduring legacy.

From Booklist
Outstanding for clarity even by the standards of the excellent American Presidents series, Brinkley’s overview of the thirty-fifth chief executive vaults to the head of the pack of basic biographies of its subject because of its thoroughness and evenhandedness. It notes all the most meaningful events and persons in Kennedy’s life and all his most salient characteristics, including his lifelong ill health and obsessive womanizing, both of which Robert Dallek soft-pedals in his John F. Kennedy (2011). Moreover, it states conflicting opinions of Kennedy and his actions throughout, though especially in the piquantly titled last chapter, “The Afterlife of John F. Kennedy.” Brinkley’s own evaluation, implicit rather than open, is admirably middle of the road. JFK was not the liberal hero ardent admirers made of him after his death, nor was he the incompetent detractors make him out to have been. Painfully slow to embrace black civil rights and guilty of embroiling the U.S. in Vietnam, he successfully resolved the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 and initiated real action on nuclear-arms limitation—no mean feats. --Ray Olson

Review
"Plenty of long, definitive works exist, but Brinkley takes his job seriously, filling 160 pages with a thoughtful, opinionated biography."―Kirkus Reviews

JOHN F. KENNEDY: THE LEGACY OF HIS LIFE, TIMES & TUMULTUOUS 1000-DAY PRESIDENCY
By RBSProds
Five EXCELLENT Stars. The latest edition in "The American Presidents Series" is an outstanding, detailed, and sobering historical account by historian Alan Brinkley of the family background, political career, the tumultuous "1000 days", and the historical significance of the 35th President of the USA, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The eloquent unchanging 'boilerplate' "Editor's Note" by Kennedy's 'special assistant', the late Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr is very fitting for this volume. Despite one historian who thought the assassinated Kennedy's short tour of presidential duty would be viewed as a "flicker" in the lineage of presidents, his legacy, as shown in this book, endures in a positive light because of his successes and despite his failures and much unfinished legislative business. This historical analysis gives many interesting facts about his life and times. A sickly child in a large family with a father driven for business success and a mother at times overwhelmed by the nine children, JFK was initially a mediocre student at the Choate prep school, during which time he began the sexual prowess which was evident during his White House years. The author tracks JFK's progress through Choate and Harvard, his WWII naval service, and his political career (with his father, Joe, successfully intervening at key times). Mr. Brinkley does a great job putting the major and minor events of JFK's life in context without unnecessarily dwelling on any topic: the true story of PT 109, meeting Jackie, the Catholicism effect, NIxon's knee, the "fluid Presidency" style, the Republican and southern Democrat House coalition against him, the disastrous "Bay of Pigs" invasion, the US vs USSR Vienna summit, the Cuban missile crisis, the "freedom rides" and the volatile civil rights issue, his lack of legislative success, "Ich bin ein Berliner", the expanding Vietnam war, the infamous Kennedy libido & his many women, Hoover, why Jackie fled a White House reception in tears, the assassination, and his incomplete goals for programs such as civil rights, Medicare, HUD, and the war on poverty. The excellent post-assassination "The Afterlife of John F. Kennedy" chapter details the many reasons for the unusual legacy of this presidency. This overview of the Kennedy life and presidential years is an excellent capsule history, laden with details that may be new even for many of us who lived through those "camelot" days of John F. Kennedy's 35th Presidency of the United States. Highly Recommended. Five INTERESTING Stars! (225 pages ~526 KB. Contains some expletives. A New Biography of John Kennedy
By Robin Friedman
John Kennedy (1917 -- 1963) served as the 35th president from 1961 until his assassination on November 22, 1963. Many baby boomers, including myself, have strong memories of Kennedy; and many people of all ages tend to see his presidency as a watershed moment for the United States. Alan Brinkley offers a sober, thoughtful, and measured account of Kennedy's life and presidency in his new short biography, "John F. Kennedy", the most recent volume in the American Presidents series edited by the late Arthur Schlesinger Jr. and Sean Wilentz. Brinkley has written extensively on 20th Century American history; his works include books about the New Deal and American liberalism.

It is difficult to think clearly about Kennedy because of the memories his name evokes, coupled with the assassination and the United States' subsequent political history. During and after his presidency, Kennedy was a highly charismatic, graceful figure who, in the view of many, was taking the United States in a new direction with a sense of mission and purpose. He was dynamic and young. Others, on both the left and right, were less enchanted and more critical. Brinkley is fully aware of the divergent views of our 35th president and he works hard to present a realistic assessment. His book suggests that Kennedy was a gifted but flawed individual who overcame severe health problems on the one hand but who behaved recklessly and carelessly thoughout his life on the other hand, particularly in his sexual relationships with women. Kennedy's presidency, Brinkley argues, would not meet the standards of greatness. Its legislative accomplishments were limited. The failed Bay of Pigs invasion and subsequent clandestine activities in Cuba haunted Kennedy's administration. Yet the president had successes in defusing the Cuban Missile Crisis and in his belated but eloquent support of civil rights.

The Kennedy that emerges from Brinkely's book is a careful, pragmatic politician with a reclusive temperament. He was markedly cool-headed and unemotional. In one of the most perceptive observations in the book, Brinkley writes, "{i[t is one of the many ironies of Kennedy's posthumous image that a man who himself was so uncomfortable with passionate commitment would inspire so much of it in others." The charisma that Kennedy possessed, the devotion of many people to him, and the possibly inevitable falling-off has generally struck me as, on the whole, unfortunate in its impact.

In its short compass, Brinkley's study covers both Kennedy's life and his presidency. Kennedy's wealthy and powerful father was critical in exerting influence and money in Kennedy's early terms in Congress and in the Senate. During these terms, Kennedy showed something of a devil-may-care character with few strong legislative accomplishments to his credit. An indifferent student for most of his life, Kennedy read widely, achieved fame with his historical writing, and won a Pulitzer Prize. Although his father had to exert pressure to allow Kennedy to serve in the military, Kennedy emerged as a war hero for his naval rescue efforts on PT-109.

Kennedy won a close election for president against Richard Nixon in 1960 and proceeded to establish what he termed the "New Frontier" with the still-famous call from his Inaugural Address: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." In successive chapters, Brinkley carefully parses through the major foreign and domestic issues in Kennedy's administration, from the Bay of Pigs Fiasco, to the Cuban Missle Crisis, to Berlin and Laos, to Civil Rights and to the confrontations with business and with U.S. Steel. Brinkely shows a Kennedy impatient with meetings, the Federal bureaucracy, and hierarchy. He governed in a seemingly undisciplined way. Although the term is usually associated with other leaders, the "imperial presidency" was not far from Kennedy's administration. The book shows both Kennedy's accomplishments and his failings. A late chapter of the book covers Kennedy's role in Vietnam. Brinkley shows that Kennedy played a substantial role in American involvement. He declines to speculate on what Kennedy might have done if he had lived. In the final chapter of the book, Brinkley discusses the many theories put foward following Kennedy's assassination. In explaining the continued fascination with Kennedy, Brinkley writes that many people:

"look back nostalgically to an era that seemed to be a time of national confidence and purpose. Kennedy reminds many Americans of an age when it was possible to believe that politics could be harnessed to America's highest aspirations, that it could be rooted in a sense of national community, that it could speak to the country's moral yearnings."

Brinkley offers a careful, restrained look at Kennedy and his influence on the "national imagination". This is one of the better books in the American presidents series. It portrays Kennedy with understanding.

John F. Kennedy's Short Presidency--What Did He Do and What Did It Mean?
By Steven Peterson
This is another nice entry in the American Presidents series, originally edited by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr and--after his death-[-Sean Wilentz. In this instance, there is some poignancy in that' Schlesinger was an adviser to Kennedy. The books in this series are brief, making information available to readers who do not want massive 600 page biographies. In that, most of the volumes succeed (although I prefer such massive works!!).

The work itself takes a chronological perspective on Kennedy. We learn of his life from birth to death--with an epilogue about Kennedy's reputation and evaluation after his death.

Kennedy grew up with a degree of privilege. His father, Joseph, became wealthy as a financier and parlayed that into an eminent career. When Kennedy became interested in politics, he was well bankrolled.

Before that, we see his childhood and youth--wracked with physical ailments and sometimes fearing for his life. He was an indifferent student in college, although he was obviously quite intelligent. When World War II began, he became commander of a PT boat--PT 109. When the boat was destroyed in combat, Kennedy handled the crisis nicely--a major boost for him as he became politically oriented.

Then, the development of his political career--House of Representatives and then the Senate; his relationship with his future wife Jacqueline Bouvier; his continual womanizing; the trajectory of his career (a potential vice presidential candidate in 1956). In 1960, he contended for the Democratic nomination for President. He succeeded (with considerable support from his father).

We then see the development of his presidency, from miserable failures (the Bay of Pigs) to successes (The Cuban Missile Crisis). He tended to be cautious and did not leave a real legacy of actual success, although many of his initiatives came about under Lyndon Johnson's presidency. There is also a realistic depiction of his role in the development of the US involvement in Vietnam.

Several positive things about this book: it is realistic; it has a critical element to it; it provides a realistic appraisal of his presidency.

All in all, if the reader wants a rather brief biography of JFK, this is a pretty good option to consider.
