Dead Kennedys' Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (33 1/3), by Michael Stewart Foley

In 1978, San Francisco, a city that has seen more than its share of trauma, plunged from a summer of political tension into an autumn cascade of malevolence that so eluded human comprehension it seemed almost demonic. The battles over property taxes and a ballot initiative calling for a ban on homosexuals teaching in public schools gave way to the madness of the Jonestown massacre and the murders of Mayor George Moscone and city supervisor Harvey Milk at the hands of their former colleague, Dan White.

In the year that followed this season of insanity, it made sense that a band called Dead Kennedys played Mabuhay Gardens in North Beach, referring to Governor Jerry Brown as a "zen fascist," calling for landlords to be lynched and yuppie gentrifiers to be sent to Cambodia to work for "a bowl of rice a day," critiquing government welfare and defense policies, and, at a time when each week seemed to bring news of a new serial killer or child abduction, commenting on dead and dying children. But it made sense only (or primarily) to those who were there, to those who experienced the heyday of "the Mab."

Most histories of the 1970s and 1980s ignore youth politics and subcultures. Drawing on Bay Area zines as well as new interviews with the band and many key figures from the early San Francisco punk scene, Michael Stewart Foley corrects that failing by treating Dead Kennedys' first record, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, as a critical historical document, one that not only qualified as political expression but, whether experienced on vinyl or from the stage of "the Mab," stimulated emotions and ideals that were, if you can believe it, utopian.

Review

“An accomplished historian with an appreciation for the punk ethic, Foley sketches the social and political conditions of the late 1970s and the band's take-no-prisoners response to them. He's also alert to San Francisco's distinctive punk scene and its unapologetically political stance. His essay is a welcome complement to the extensive literature on the city's utopian mood and music of the 1960s. ... Very worthwhile.” ―Peter Richardson, San Francisco State University, Peter Richardson

“Wish all books dealing with 'Punk Rock' were as well researched as this one!” ―V. Vale, Editor, Search and Destroy

“Author Michael Stewart Foley explores the band's genesis from two equally critical points of view in his eponymous book in the 33 1/3 series, the political and social factors alive in California at the time as well as the stew of underground creativity that fed punk's fetid blossom ... Foley's book does the album a good turn, his eye for the social inspirations behind Biafra and others, as well as the creative are essential to its understanding.” ―Bearded Magazine

“Michael Stewart Foley's new book on Dead Kennedys' debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, rests a jarring assertion: 'By ... the summer of 1978, San Francisco had established itself as home to the most political punk scene in the country.' His evidence - a litany of benefit efforts, topical songs, and punks' steady solidarity with other marginalized groups - is solid, so why does the statement leap off of the page? Perhaps because of how infrequently it's made ... the sort of retrospective historical works that would involve a claim such as Foley's are few and far between, all of which underscores the need for this book.” ―East Bay Express

“Michael Stewart Foley's Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables is a must read not only for punks young and old, but for anyone who has ever felt even the slightest revolutionary pang in their soul ... Through interviews with Jello Biafra, East Bay Ray, and Klaus Fluoride (as well as many other important figures close to, or in the scene at the time) and a mountain of research, Foley puts together a book that is academic, personal, informative, and most importantly, convincing. For those already familiar with Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, this book further solidifies its greatness among records in any genre. For those new to the album, this book provides an extensive and comprehensive look into a body of work whose release exploded on the scene because of the pressures caused by the era, events, and people that all came together to create it.” ―Matt Caltabiano, Under the Rader

“In his book on Dead Kennedys' 1980 debut, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, historian Michael Stewart Foley traces the origins of the radicalized California punk band's political views by chronicling all the turmoil in the late 1960s and into the 1970s, as the hippie ideal curdled into the Me Generation ... what truly separated the Kennedys from their peers-and what transformed their angst into something powerful and useful-was the humor with which they tackled current events, as singer Jello Biafra in particular understood that a wicked sense of irony was the only weapon against a world that had grown so insane.” ―Stephen M. Deusner, Pitchfork

“With Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, historian Michael Stewart Foley offers up a portrait of San Francisco in the late 1970s, detailing the hectic and violent events that influenced the band to create such a classic record ... Anyone interested in the band, counter culture, or American history would be advised to pick this book up. It's not just a simple play by play of the album's production (which, honestly, would have been fine), but a detailed account of a specific time in history. With this informative (if short) book, Michael Stewart Foley details a band who didn't want to 'make it' in the usual sense. They just wanted to make a loud enough noise that people turned around and paid attention to what was going on around them.” ―Punk News

“Give it some time and Michael Stewart Foley's book on Dead Kennedys' Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables will probably rank among the best of the 33 1/3 series. It's a fine portrait of politics that gave birth to the Bay Area punk scene, all the while tracing a counterculture throughline from the Yippies of the 60s to the punks of at the beginning of the '80s. Dead Kennedys sneered in the face of both Ronald Reagan and Jerry Brown, and also at the birth of New Wave, which presented new sonic possibilities but also a crass mellowing out into palatable pop chart fodder once it was co-opted by the mainstream.” ―Hubert Vigilla, Ruby Hornet

“Foley comes at this well known [sic] album from something other than the standard 'review' perspective positing the theory that it was in fact the late 70's American dream gone sour and subsequent counter culture politics that created bands like the Dead Kennedy's in the first place … is in fact a very readable little nugget that DK fans, especially those who understood there was far more to the band than simple 'shock and roll', will thoroughly enjoy. Beyond that it should also appeal to pretty much anyone who has a passing interest in the US post punk/hardcore scene.” -Total Music Magazine

“There have been a handful of punk albums covered in the series … and they tend to be stand-outs. That remains true with this release, which may now be my favorite in the entire series … [Foley’s] tone is pitch-perfect, reflecting both his academic training and his punk rock roots, producing the equivalent of a scholarly spit-ball that complements the pissy intelligence of the DKs’ masterpiece. His writing is effortless, even when he is flexing his intellectual muscles … As I read Foley’s book, I found myself constantly re-listening to the album with fresh ears, my appreciation and admiration of it growing every time.” –Kevin Dunn, RazorCake

“Michael Stewart Foley’s Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables casts Dead Kennedys as a product of the darkness and seemingly hopelessness of the late 1970s. Foley shows their forming and the release of their debut album to represent a catalyst for the frustration of a generation that was given the promise of prosperity in the 1960s and then proceeded to watch that promise be dismantled by the Vietnam War, Watergate and the rise of gentrification in San Francisco during the post-Summer of Love era … In doing so, Foley also casts a favorable light on the political stance of punk and suggests that their dire situation as a marginalized community organizing against an oppressive system was not only necessary but almost natural … This book is essential to your understanding of punk as a threat and why this iconic album represents that.”-Nick Kuzmack, SLUG

“…an incisive blend of urban history, socio-political witnessing, and pop culture insight. Peeling back the band’s mythos, [Foley] deftly sorts through family backgrounds, the countercultural movements of the 1960s and 1970s, and the nuanced and fecund microcosm of San Francisco during punk’s genesis, all at a breathless pace. The book is compact, yet exploratory, dense as well as poetic … Foley balances the eyes-wide-open vibe of a fan’s journal with his strenuous academic precision, so readers feel immersed in, but not overwhelmed by, the incendiary band’s tale.” –David Ensminger, Houston Press

“Full of compelling portraits of key players, trenchant musicological and visual cultural analysis, and rich journalistic-cum-historical depictions of the state of California and San Francisco politics at the end of the 1970s, Foley’s book is a success that will appeal both to scholars and to fans. In unveiling a portrait of the Dead Kennedys and punk as creators of ‘a soundtrack of collective resistance’ (p. 9), Foley not only rescues San Francisco punk from the condescension of posterity, but provides a model of how to write historically about youth subcultures and popular music.” -Timothy Scott Brown, Northeastern University, USA, The Sixties: A Journal of History, Politics and Culture

Excellent account of the cultural conditions in San Francisco that ...
By Marc Zegans
Excellent account of the cultural conditions in San Francisco that gave rise to the Dead Kennedys and their seminal album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. Foley's careful, engaging and erudite history, captures the San Francisco torn by violence, greed and larger social forces within which the local punk scene thrived. He captures the feel, the pace and the sensibilities of the scene and the vacuum which the Dead Kennedys filled with songs laden with black political humor to a degree that, as someone who lived through that era, I find remarkable. Foley's decision to center most of the book on the build to the album, and to conclude with an honest assessment of Fresh Fruit's location in the history of subcultural music, rather than belaboring the album's influence, gives the book unexpected power, drive and focus. Neither paean, nor arid cultural criticism, Foley's Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables, puts us inside the punk scene and the forces that made it with passion, clarity, memorable prose and deft insight. Do read.

Three Chords and the (Painful) Truth
By Peter Richardson
This short book (about 40,000 words) situates the San Francisco punk band's outrageous first album in an exceedingly troubled time in the city's history--a period author David Talbot, drawing on the Donovan song title, calls "the season of the witch." Released in 1980, "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" coincided with a sharp cutback in social services, a steep rise in homelessness, and what one contemporary punk called "the golden age of serial killers." An accomplished historian with an appreciation for the punk ethic, Michael Stewart Foley sketches the social and political conditions of the late 1970s and the band's take-no-prisoners response to them. He's also alert to San Francisco's distinctive punk scene and its unapologetically political stance. His book is a welcome complement to the extensive literature on the city's utopian mood and music of the 1960s. In fact, he argues that Dead Kennedy's project was also utopian insofar as it prefigured the searingly truthful society it hoped to create.

A good anomaly
By D. K. Malone
Ordinarily I don't care much for 33.3 books that fall under this model, i.e. fail to focus on the album itself and how it was made. It starts out as the story of how the DKs formed, but it then very quickly switches gears. It's primarily a thesis on the events in California in general and San Francisco in particular throughout the 60s and 70s that led up to the state of affairs that fostered and sustained the SF punk scene. The references to what was actually happening with the band seem tangential at times, but they occur often enough to make it bearable to me. Being a native Californian old enough to remember many of the key events discussed in the book made it feel personally relevant in ways certain other 33.3 books didn't. After a few chapters of set-up, the last chapter finally focuses on the album itself. The DKs were one of my first favorite punk bands, but somehow they're also one that I have rarely listened to over the ensuing years, unlike some of my other old favorites. Reading this has rekindled my interest and motivated me to listen again for the first time in ages.

Keeping secrets is easy. Until love tempts him to break his cover. Fall or Break, Book 2 Archer Hart, former SIS assassin, has just completed a freelance hit job when he finds himself in a sniper's scope. The bullet whizzing past his ear is a clear message: someone wants him dead. Retirement will have to wait, as his only choice is to assume a new identity-and keep running. Conrad Black is a broken man. The injured barrister has come to the beach to recover from a hit-and-run "accident", with plenty of time to wonder who might be wishing he'd been left dead instead of partially paralyzed. When he spots a surfer in trouble, he throws his crutches aside to pull the man to safety. One glance at Archer takes Conrad's breath away. And Archer finds himself envying the hands Conrad is using to pet his dog. But as the net tightens, both men can feel the targets on their backs heating up. The only thing that will save them is the truth...before death snatches away their one chance at love. Warning: Contains a mercenary who's broken the law beyond all recognition, and a stodgy barrister who is the law. Also: a whole lot of crossing lines drawn in the sand, and even more tussling to determine who gets on top.

“Keeping secrets is easy. Until love tempts him to break his cover.”

Breaking by Barbara Elsborg is book two in her series entitled Fall or Break. I am a huge fan of this author and her witty and unapologetic writing style. I particularly loved the first book in this series. I would have to state that both books thus far in this series have more somber undertones, are emotionally angsty and are a bit darker than other books I have read by this author. Like its predecessor, this second installment to the series was riveting right from the start. This is a book about two individuals who live their lives on very opposite ends of the spectrum but are also both scarred in different ways. Frankly, both men find themselves in some pretty dangerous and desolate circumstances for difference reasons. It’s about how they find one another and embark on a journey that changes the scope of their landscape forever.

We meet the powerful and all-consuming Conrad Black in book one. He came across as someone who was only interested in his own agenda. Although, we did discover that he is capable of some good. In this book we find Conrad recovering from a hit and run, an “accident” that he feels was a deliberate attempt on his life. With all his energy going towards regaining mobility from his partial paralysis, Conrad does not have time to ascertain as to whether his hunch about the hit and run is correct. Conrad escapes to a secluded home near Seahouses in the Nothumberland coast. Here he doesn’t have to deal with his family, friends and colleagues seeing him at his weakest. He can focus on regaining strength and recovering. He can also focus on wallowing in his self-pity and digging himself deeper into this black hole of despair he finds himself in. Little does he know that things would change when he risks his life to save a drowning surfer.

Archer Hart has lived his life behind an illusion, a carefully planned faade so that the choices he has made when it comes to his employment do not catch up to him. He most certainly is an enigma, a hitman who is all about hard edges and self-control. Archer has decided that he wants out and no longer wants to be a killer for hire. However, leaving is not exactly an easy accomplishment when he has someone after him who wants him dead. Archer finds himself on the run. Will this always be his life? Keeping people at a distance. Constantly on the move. Never settling down. Archer has never met anyone that has made him want to risk taking the chance of opening up and staying in one location. Until now.

“There could be no future for him and Conrad. For once in his life he had to put someone else before himself. I’m toxic. The long her was with Conrad, the more he’d poison him.”

*****

“You know we’re doomed, right? There’s no way this can work. I’ve broken the law in the worst possible way. You are the law.”

*****

“I wish for your sake that I didn’t want you.” ~Archer

When Archer and Conrad meet there is no denying the ignitable spark between them and the men form a tentative and fragile relationship. Both men are scarred and broken, hesitant to trust and pursue anything despite their combustible attraction. With this being said, it does not take long for something more profound to begin developing between the pair; however, with both men in the path of danger, how long will it take before their time runs out? Will the pair be able to withstand the constant bombardment of obstacles and danger that seem to keep appearing and standing in their way? Further, how can Archer and Conrad get past the fact that they stand on opposite ends of the law – one is the law while the other exists outside the rigid confines of the law?

I loved the romance between Archer and Conrad. I loved how their emotional connection developed slowly and organically, even though the sexual chemistry between them was piping hot right from the start. Despite the uncertain and horrible circumstances both men were in, they seemed to be exactly what the other needed. A shining light in their drab and murky worlds. Conrad needed someone to stand up to him and take the control out of his hands. Who better to do this than a hard-edged hitman who likes it a little kinky? Regardless of the darker undertones to the overall story arc, the actual love story was truly sweet and heart-felt. Both men are hesitant to start things at first considering their personal battle with trust issues as well as the fact that they are so completely different. You have a hitman and a barrister who both have an array of emotional and psychological hurdles to overcome.

“Conrad wanted him, even though he knew he’d never keep him, wanted him even though he knew he was dangerous, wanted him because he made him feel alive.”

*****

“Conrad had to fight. Archer had understood before Conrad. It was the only way Conrad could do this. He had to fight and Archer had to break him.”

Both protagonists are these endearing and complex characters, and this author does a wonderful job stripping away the layers and intermixing it with some heavy steam and a suspenseful storyline. The mystery surrounding who exactly was after each man was well done. It kept me turning the pages completely engulfed in all that was happening. Further, as in most Barbara Elsborg books, we get quite a few hot and heavy scenes. I loved how passionate Archer and Conrad were with one another as they explored all that was between them. The back and forth, push and pull, between the two men kept things seriously heated. Two alpha males fighting for dominance. Yum!

One of the things I loved most about this book, as with many books by this author, was the humour. I loved discovering that Conrad had this charming and funny side to his personality. The banter exchanged between both men had me laughing out loud numerous times through-out the storyline.

“Slight problem,” Conrad said as he knelt between Archer’s legs.

Archer eyed a c*** twice the size he recalled. “Doesn’t look slight. C***** you’re hung like a donkey.”

Conrad laughed. “Donkey? I couldn’t have had anaconda or elephant or Argentine lake duck?”

“A duck?”

“It has a seventeen-inch c*** and the duck is only sixteen inches long.”

Archer chuckled. “So what’s the problem? I’m grateful you don’t have a seventeen-inch c***.”

LOL!

Once again Barbara Elsborg has penned a captivating and moving tale with Breaking. The ending had me happily sighing and feeling very satisfied. I am hoping that there will be more to this series. Fingers crossed.

Rhetoric: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions), by Richard Toye

Rhetoric was once an essential part of western education. Aristotle wrote an important treatise on it and Demosthenes remains famous to this day for his skills as a rhetorician. But skill with rhetoric today is no longer admired. Rhetoric is often seen as a synonym for shallow, deceptive language-empty words, empty rhetoric--and therefore as something quite negative. But if we view rhetoric in more neutral terms, as the "art of persuasion," it is clear that we are all forced to engage with it at some level, if only because we are constantly exposed to the rhetoric of others. In this Very Short Introduction, Richard Toye explores the purpose of rhetoric. Rather than presenting a defense of it, he considers it as the foundation-stone of civil society, and an essential part of any democratic process. Using wide-ranging examples from ancient Greece, medieval Islamic preaching, the wartime speeches of Winston Churchill, and modern cinema, Toye considers why we should all have an appreciation of the art of rhetoric.

About the Series:

Oxford's Very Short Introductions series offers concise and original introductions to a wide range of subjects--from Islam to Sociology, Politics to Classics, Literary Theory to History, and Archaeology to the Bible. Not simply a textbook of definitions, each volume in this series provides trenchant and provocative--yet always balanced and complete--discussions of the central issues in a given discipline or field. Every Very Short Introduction gives a readable evolution of the subject in question, demonstrating how the subject has developed and how it has influenced society. Eventually, the series will encompass every major academic discipline, offering all students an accessible and abundant reference library. Whatever the area of study that one deems important or appealing, whatever the topic that fascinates the general reader, the Very Short Introductions series has a handy and affordable guide that will likely prove indispensable.

Rhetoric matters. To explicate this shaggy beast in 35,000 words is no small challenge, and Toye succeeds with a consistently light touch. The Speechwriter

Exactly as advertised: an introduction. Not a how-to, but a description
By Graham H. Seibert
Rhetoric is the art of speaking. The Greeks both prized and despised it. Plato gave the Sophists and rhetoricians a bad name which has endured for two and a half millennia, yet rhetoric has been part of any standard curriculum in the West for much of that time.

It is well known that there is a vast difference between the truth of an argument and its persuasive power. Lawyers have always been suspect: they say whatever they need in order to win. All of America thought that O. J. Simpson murdered his wife, but skillful rhetoric by his attorney Johnnie Cochran got him acquitted. As far back as Machiavelli, lying and rhetoric have been recognized as essential tools of statecraft.

Rhetoric appeals to three aspects of self: logos, ethos and pathos. The Greeks named them - they have been studied ever since. The first is logic - the quality of an argument itself. The second is an appeal to character, or ethics. The third is an appeal to the emotions, i.e., "You can't execute this triple murderer- he's just a boy."

Toye identifies three ages of rhetoric. An oral age, that of the Greeks, when few people read and wrote, and argument was therefore spoken. It was followed by a literary age, after the invention of the printing press, when authors were able to start to use longer constructions and more sophisticated vocabularies suited to reading. It was also a time when the topics of argument became more complex: public policy involved schools and bond issues as often as wars. It is followed by a second oral age, today, which started just short of a century ago with radio, and has accelerated with the spread of TV and the extension of the voting franchise to just about anybody who owns one.

Toye offers an invitation to analyze texts for use of the classical rhetorical devices such as the tricolon and antithesis. He suggests looking closely at the structure of arguments, oral or written. Tricks: "Have you stopped beating your wife?" One of the most valuable aspects of the book is the set of problems he poses for the reader, opportunities to explore how rhetoric is used now and in history.

Words alone do not carry the argument. He offers a discussion of the nonverbal aspects of speech: voice, gesture, and the choice of clothing, venue, backdrop and anything else that will visually sway the audience.

Rhetoric depends on the shared values and culture of the audience. A British political speech is pitched at fellow members of the legislature; a speech by the American President nowadays bypasses Congress, working to sway the electorate to put pressure on their Congressmen.

Words never mean just one thing. Context and time are always important. He cites literary theory and deconstruction - Foucault and Richards et al. He does not get into semantics. Others such as Chomsky, Hayakawa and Wittgenstein have a lot to say about the meaning of words, and how much meaning they contain. Kahneman, Trivers and Ariely among others have looked deeply into self-deception, which often means, of course, allowing oneself to be deceived by appealing rhetoric.

The book is erudite while still being easy to read. The work of a man very comfortable with the language, as one would hope. A pleasant, quick read.

Rhetoric stresses the importance of what is not said. There is a modern campaign, a highly successful one, to rule out discussion of certain topics. They are not resolved, they simply remain unarguable by serious contenders. However, PC goes in and out of fashion. As a book title says of communism, "Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More"

Conclusion - Read if for exactly what it claims to be, a short introduction. It is also a defense, and a justification for the study of rhetoric for the sake of recognizing and defending yourself against rhetorical questions (viz, my wife had me smell her wrist yesterday and asked "Honey, do I deserve this $200 perfume?"). If you want to practice the tricks yourself, there are many "How to" books about rhetoric, on everything from the art of seducing women, from Ovid through RoushV (whom I review), to the art of seducing voters.

A good informative read
By Sussman
This is my first foray into the series `A Very Short Introductions'. I was intrigued by the premise that these titles were intended to give the reader a jump start in subject in a reasonably short, straight forward and concise fashion. The topic here, being `Rhetoric' the ability for people through speech or the written word to attempt to enlighten, influence, or encourage particular audiences in specific situations to their point of view/theory. For me the book seemed to given over more the take of the subject through history and its importance as a subject of formal study and a productive civic practice, and the role that rhetoric has played with in the Western tradition. Like other reviewers have commented I found it initially a hard book to get into, but once there I felt the `journey' was worthwhile. All in all a good productive read and hence my 4 star rating.

The Process of Discovery
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
Back in my teaching days, I premised my lesson plans on rhetoric but, like many new teachers, I had less background than I would've liked. I purchased books and pricy downloads to supplement my knowledge, struggling to stay one step ahead of my students. But the sources for which I paid dearly generally assumed you already had prior familiarity with other aspects of rhetorical theory. Why, I wondered, pulling my hair, doesn't somebody write a synoptic overview so beginners know where to begin researching?

I wish this book existed when I started teaching, nearly a decade ago. The book offers exactly what the title suggests, a brief primer to rhetoric as an academic discipline. This includes a thumbnail history of important moments and important texts, a survey of important rhetorical practices, a concise handlist of the most common rhetorical devices, and a pithy introduction to rhetorical analysis. Basically, it guides readers through the discipline without falling back on jargon or assuming we have any prior familiarity with the field.

Possibly my favorite part comes closer to the end. Having spent early chapters introducing readers to the discipline's history, and giving us an overview of the parts everybody largely agrees upon, Professor Toye shifts to recent developments and ongoing research. He admits that the ancient Greco-Roman dream of a universal, invariable science of persuasion (the roots of rhetoric) will probably never happen. But he guides us through recent advances in social science and technological progress, and says, if rhetoric will never be a science, it's nevertheless a fertile field for new research.

The text includes brief exercises for individual or group study. These are just brief attempts to put rhetorical principles into useful context; this isn't a textbook for classroom study, though a dedicated teacher could use it that way. Instead, it's an attempt to give current or potential students a shared vocabulary of prior assumptions, so that when we get into the actual textbooks—which, if you look at them, subdivide quickly into numerous sub-specialties—we have basic agreement on what words mean, and enough background to know where to focus our energy.

Rhetoric, as an academic discipline, has seen a remarkable rebirth in America in the last thirty years. Professor Toye, British himself, admits the UK hasn't embraced this trend yet, but recent changes suggest it may soon. Far from being mere bombast or tedious ornamentation, the ideas we mean when we dismiss "mere rhetoric," the process of arranging ideas persuasively is a discipline that helps create and advance new ideas. The ancients called rhetoric "discovery" for a reason. And this brief precis will let you join the discussion.
