About the Author

Sarah Kane was born in 1971. Her first play, Blasted, was produced at the Royal Court Theatre Upstai rs in 1995. Her second play, Phaedra's Love, was produced at the Gate Theatre in 1996. In April 1998 , Cleansed was produced at the Royal Court Theatre Downstairs, and in September 1998, Crave was prod uced at Paines Plough and Bright Ltd at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh. Her last play, 4.48 Psychos is, premiered at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Upstairs in June 2000. Her short film, Skin, produc ed by British Screen/Channel Four, premiered in June 1997. Sarah Kane died in 1999.

A brilliant modern twist on a classic Roman play that had me hooked from beginning to end. It's short, but sweet. Okay, aaaaand a bit "sour" here and there.

I don't want to say too much, but if you're a fan the original tale (or classic tragedies in general) and have a bit of an open mind, then you will love Sarah Kane's rendition of Seneca's "Phaedra."

If you've never read the original. this remake is still worth a read.

Pres and his wife were back-to-back petanque tournament champs at Indiana's Bastille Day celebration in 2014 and 2015. The tournament was cancelled in Indiana in 2016, but they are confident that they would have three-peated.

Fun Mystery

Bender at the Bon Parisien by Pres Maxson is mysterious and suspenseful. It is a story of one night at a hotel bar told with flashbacks presented by various characters. The flashbacks give readers a glimpse into the character/narrator as well as some key clues in the mystery. The story is told primarily from the point of view of Peter, a visiting American, and since he has the least knowledge of the pieces of the puzzle, his view of what is happening is sometimes surreal.

Peter, a journalist, and his wife, Janie, a poet-student, accidentally play host to a myriad of quirky characters at the Bon Parisen bar on the evening in question. Although Peter is a primary narrator of the story, we really don’t get to know him (or Janie) all that well. Opera singer, Trudel, street performer, Pistache, and clock maker, Fleuse are mourning their missing and assumed-dead friend, Victor, when the antics begin. These characters are slowly developed—or revealed—as the evening progresses and the action begins.

My favorite quote from the book is a little note that Janie has jotted on a cocktail napkin: “Bees’ hearts beat faster when there’s honey in the hive.” It would seem that all the characters in this book are busy little bees.

Bender at the Bon Parisien is filled with quirky characters, predictable and surprising plot points, and a fabulously untidy ending. I enjoyed the pace of the story and chaos of the scenes. I immensely disliked the required suspension of disbelief required to think that no one in the hotel was suspicious of the noise and commotion in the “closed for business” lobby bar. Chapter headings that clue the reader into the fact that they’re “re-reading” a scene from another characters point of view would have been helpful. Overall, a fun read that I would rate 3.5 to 4 stars.

As a former bar manager I felt compelled to review this book because it has a feel of off-kilterness. It's funny in a quirky and Wes Anderson way... but somehow a little more realistic. The pages go by quickly and the storyline just works. Good friggin book.

A Book Club must read!

This will be a great book for discussion and it’s the best I’ve read in a long time. Pres uses prose as a guide to transport us to a small bar in a hotel in Paris. The setting is so vividly created that it just feels real. After getting to know the two Americans, Janie and Pete, a fascinating and imaginative group of French characters is introduced. I was fully engulfed as the suspense mounted and the story evolved with unexpected twists and some laughable circumstances.

Pres takes a daring approach to writing as he fills in the backstory with a different person’s perspective as events unfold. It works. The story is creative and complex, but it’s an easy read that I found hard to put down. My greatest compliments to the author!

He is currently president and publisher of IGI Global, an international academic publishing house with headquarters in Hershey, PA and an editorial office in New York City. He also serves as executive director of the Information Resources Management Association (IRMA) and executive director of the World Forgotten Children s Foundation. He is the author/editor of over twenty books in information technology management. This is a great starter kit

This is a great starter kit! My wife bought me this to see if I was serious abou learning the uke, and i learned a lot from strumming the saprono-size uke and learning the songs, before trading up to my current ukulele. The price is worth it for the great book alone! It is a perfect way to introduce both older kids and adults to a great instrument!

Feels a lot like a toy to me

When I tried to use the instrument the neck broke away from base. Not fully, as the lip of the neck held it on. I used wood glue to repair it.

Using a tuner tool I was able to tune the ukulele and star practicing chords. Within two minutes at least one string will be back out of tune. I tightened the screes holding the tuning knobs in place. Now they hold a tune for five minutes. I think the plastic strings are stretching.

Given a little time the strings may finish stretching.

The book is ok I suppose. I think some YouTube videos would have been more helpful. The book did not help with much. Surely stretching strings is common with this model. They could have mentioned it.

The songs are only cords and lyrics, but they do include a cd. Not that anyone owns a cd player anymore. Again, having this all on YouTube would be far more helpful.

Perhaps this is just the complaints of a bitter new student. I have only been trying to use it for 3 or 4 hours. It feels like longer, what with the wood glue.
