About the Technology
Much of the data today is highly connected—from social networks to supply chains to software dependency management—and more connections are continually being uncovered. Neo4j is an ideal graph database tool for highly connected data. It is mature, production-ready, and unique in enabling developers to simply and efficiently model and query connected data.
About the Book
Neo4j in Action is a comprehensive guide to designing, implementing, and querying graph data using Neo4j. Using hands-on examples, you'll learn to model graph domains naturally with Neo4j graph structures. The book explores the full power of native Java APIs for graph data manipulation and querying. It also covers Cypher, Neo4j's graph query language. Along the way, you'll learn how to integrate Neo4j into your domain-driven app using Spring Data Neo4j, as well as how to use Neo4j in standalone server or embedded modes.
Knowledge of Java basics is required. No prior experience with graph data or Neo4j is assumed.

A book with some unexpressed potential that fails to make your learning process easier.
By Francesco Bianchi
I feel bad about it but despite the evident effort the authors and all the staff at Manning put in writing this book I have to go with a low score.
I always try to finish all the books I start but in this case I wasn't able to got past half of it, when I realized I was wasting my time.
Please, don't get me wrong. It's not that the book is not worth at all or that is saying something wrong. The problem is that if failed to make my time spent reading it valuable.
The reason for it is not a single but more a mix of the following flaws:
- too much time is spent in explaining very basic concepts
- moderately complex concepts are just run over. You get the idea but you can't feel like you have gain a deeper knowledge of it
- difficult concepts are not even present in the first half of the book
- contents are organized poorly. I am not talking of the chapters. Summary is well thought. The problem is how a topics are developed. It's not rare that while a topic is explained, a long break is taken to explain something else (tipically one of those moderately complex topics I have just mentioned)
- theory is almost not present at all
- the book is too short to cover an entirely new storing technology which follows a not common approach (where you could take many concepts for granted)
While reading the book it seemed to me to be reading a very basic tutorial or some kind of introductory documentation, just 3-4 times longer than needed. And at the end of the chapter I didn't feel like I have learnt anything new if not 1 or 2 commands (nothing I can't easily google for in zero-time).
On top of this, some minor flaws which obviously aren't critical but are really annoying:
- too much emphasis is dedicated to performance in chapter one. I understand the first chapter is where you usually try to get the reader interested in the technology you are describing but sometimes there's no need to stress so much numbers that sometimes smell to be tailored to obtain the desired outcome more than giving an objective benchmark
- some code example have variables named too poorly, even for introductory chapters (2 examples from the book are MyRelationshipTypes or MyLabels)
- the layout chosen for the book often breaks a line of code to leave space for comments. Something that could be easily avoided without affecting the content
At last, the style of writing didn't seem to be consistent throughout the book and this affected overall readability. Maybe having 2+3 authors working on the same relatively short book didn't help.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Excellent introduction to Neo4j
By Stephen J Rice
Neo4j in Action is a book about the Neo4j graph database. Graph databases are much better performing than relational databases with large datasets of graph-type data, such as social networks. Currently, most applications use traditional relational database technologies and most developers are familiar with these, but in some instances it does make sense to consider other solutions. Because of the entrenchment of relational DBs, this book makes a concerted effort to explain the use-cases and advantages of graph databases. I found this book well written, easy to follow and fun to read The code snippets are easy to understand and are either in Java or Cypher, the Neo4j query language. Knowledge of Java is assumed, but the Cypher language is fully explained.
Neo4j can be used in either "embedded" or "server" mode. The book places more emphasis on the embedded mode, even though I think the server mode is more likely to be used in serious usage. There is however still a good introduction to server mode.
Overall, an excellent introduction to the Neo4j database technology.

Well thought out and delivered
By Daphney
Good detailed book. Examples are rich and well documented. The listings have arrows with numbered descriptions which must have been a bugger to put together but they are very helpful. Good index with information I couldn't find on the web.
