Not only does this book address the history of manga, it is intelligently written. It gives a complete description to the culture of manga, and addresses the culture surrounding it. Some of the manga that Americans would consider to be offensive is mainstream in Japan, etc.

Gr 4-7-Five dragonets are hatched under a mountain, in the care of a group of rebel dragons, the Talons of Peace. They are key to a prophecy that will end the war raging among the dragon tribes. They clearly have a destiny, but no one is sure about the role of Glory, a beautiful Rainwing. She was not one of the original five, but a replacement for an egg that was cruelly smashed in an attempt by power-hungry dragons to thwart the fulfillment of the prophecy. When her life is threatened, the dragonets stage a daring escape from the mountain but are captured by the Skywing queen, Scarlet. She forces them to participate in gladiatorlike competitions for her amusement. Each one is eventually forced to fight Peril, her champion, whose very touch is made of fire. A fight with Peril is certain death, and she instills fear in all who meet her-all but the Mudwing dragonet Clay. The two develop a cautious and unlikely friendship. As the dragonets fight to survive, and Clay's relationship with Peril deepens, thrilling secrets of their pasts are revealed. A must for the fourth grade library!

Wings of Fire #1: The Dragonet Prophecy, by Tui T. Sutherland (Scholastic, July 1, 2012, ages 8 and up) , is a winner. If you have a fourth grader who's read these series--Warriors, the Guardians of Ga'hoole, and How To Train Your Dragon--and who is casting around for a new book, this is the book you should give him or her. It is a must-have for the fourth grade library (which I don't think I've ever said about a book before) and I enjoyed it rather a lot myself!

Five dragonets, each from different tribe of dragons, were taken from their homes before they even hatched, and raised in hidden cave, knowing only each other and the cold dragon guardians who watched their every move. They were raised to be the dragonets prophesied to end a terrible and bloody conflict that was tearing apart the seven tribes (Sandwings,Mudwings, Skywings, Seawings,etc.)...but the Talons of Peace, the dragons who are raising them, are afraid that they've failed to meet the terms of the prophecy. Instead of a Skywing, they ended up with a Rainwing--a tribe of dragons sneered at for being lazy and useless.

And so the guardians plan to dispose of Glory, the little Rainwing.

But the five dragonets are a team, and when they hear that Glory might be killed, they plan a daring escape. Each has their own strengths, and their own weaknesses, and none has ever been outside before. Almost immediately, they are captured by the evil Queen of the Skywings, whose greatest joy is to pit dragon against dragon in her arena of death....There the Skywing champion, barely more than a dragonet herself, defeats all comers. But the Dragonets of the Prophecy are different from other dragons--they are not bound by loyalty to their own tribes, but too each other. And that loyalty will save them....

Told from the point of view of Clay, a Mudwing, it's story of friendship, impossible expectations, and a world at war.

I sincerely enjoyed this one! I must confess I was doubtful at first, a bit condescending even, but once the dragonets had escaped from their cave, it was a page-turner! It helped that the the various dragons were sufficiently characterized to be interesting, and that the world building of all the different kinds of dragons was fascinating. It helped even more so that the fights to the death in the Skywing arena weren't sugar-coated, but deadly serious, and that the Skywings champion was a surprisingly sympathetic character. It also helped that I, in general, am a fan of plucky orphans with interesting skills raised in miserable circumstances but making good, and as these dragonets are de facto orphans, they fit the bill nicely.

But even beyond those details of story, what pleased even cynical me most was that there were themes here that I was happy to have my son think about--loyalty to friends transcending blind loyalty to tribe, the need to empathize with other points of view, the need to try your best to shape your own destiny, and not be someone's tool, and the senselessness of war.

The sensitive young reader might be troubled by some of the violence--dragons really do kill other dragons. But no beloved characters die, so it's not too upsetting. It's very much in the child mindset, though--the main character, Clay the Mudwing, really wants to find his own mama....

Love This New Series!

There are fantastic drawings and descriptions of each of the dragon tribes at the beginning of the book that made for a necessary reference when trying to keep the characters straight while reading. The dragons have human-like personalities, especially the dragonets, raised to bring peace to the world. The young dragonets have good hearts and not at all violent. Even the central character Clay, a MudWing, who supposedly attacked his peers' eggs as soon as he hatched - can't seem to bring forth that fury within himself again. So, when the dragonets emerge from their secluded place of protection and training, none of them are prepared for a world where dragons have lived in war for ages. The dragons on the outside are hard, violent, and cruel - with a vastly different set of moral conduct.

I absolutely fell in love with Sutherland's world of diverse dragons, intrigue, and prophecy. But the highlight of the story is certainly the five young dragons, and Clay in particular. Their bravery, selflessness for each other, and innocence is heartwarming in the midst of their dark surroundings. Wings of Fire is the first in the Dragonet Prophecy series with plenty of promise. The series is marketed for middle readers, but can be enjoyed by fantasy fans of all ages. Though it is somewhat dark and could be a bit violent at times for younger children. Full of adventure, suspense, fascinating characters, and plenty of surprises along the way - this novel was impossible to put down. I'll be eagerly awaiting the sequel, planned to release in January 2013.

Not age-appropriate in my house.

First, let me say that I've only read through chapter 4, and although I plan to read the rest because I personally enjoy it, I won't be sharing it with my 7-year-old like I had planned because it is not age-appropriate for him. I got this (from Amazon Vine) because he is a very advanced reader (Amazon claims it is for ages 8 and up) and loves a good action story.

In the "Prologue," an evil dragon crushes the egg that a good dragon was carrying: "With an exaggerated lunge, Burn pretended the wet egg was slipping through her talons . . . and then she let it fall over the side of the cliff into the rocky darkness below." And later, she kills the good dragon: "Her claws ripped through the silver dragon's wings, shredding them as Hvitur shrieked in agony. With a swift movement, she stabbed her poisonous tail through his skull and flung the long, silver body over the edge of the cliff. The ice dragon's screams cut off long before the echoes of his corpse slamming into the rocks below."

While I understand how important it is to establish an antagonist in a great story like this, I object to the ever-intensifying violence aimed at younger and younger crowds. However, even if I did allow my son to read it, or if he came across it on his own, he would toss it aside because (1), he hates to see the good guys suffer, and (2) it's confusing!! I had to take notes to remember which dragon was which and who was at war with whom. I'm sure that he would be wildly confused. And the violence doesn't end in the prologue, unfortunately the dragons' training is based on fighting each other and their caregivers, sometimes brutally.

Essentially, my two-star review is aimed not at the story, which is really great, but at the targeted age level. For a child in my family, in which we've limited the amount of intense violence we're exposed to, this is more appropriate for an older child or pre-teen. I can't speak for other families who may have a different level of tolerance for violence, but I hope I gave a good enough example that you can decide for yourself.

About the Author
Cliff Hastings has been at Wolfram Research since 1997. After graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor s degree in mathematics from Monmouth College, he joined Wolfram as an evangelist aboard the MathMobile, traveling the country training people to use Mathematica. As the author of the original Hands-on Start to Mathematica video series, his passion has always been helping people get started with Mathematica.

Kelvin Mischo is a Certified Mathematica Trainer and works at Wolfram Research overseeing strategic relationships with academic organizations in North America. After learning Mathematica as a student at the University of Illinois, Kelvin joined Wolfram in 1998 to work with high schools on the integration of Mathematica into their courses. Kelvin has given hundreds of technical seminars and trainings on Mathematica to high schools, two-year colleges, and universities.

Michael Morrison joined Wolfram Research in 2005 after completing a bachelor s degree in computer science and mathematics from Illinois Wesleyan University and a master s degree in mathematics from Illinois State University. While at Wolfram, Michael held a variety of positions, ranging from the technical education of internal staff to using Mathematica for data analysis and reporting initiatives. Michael is currently employed at Illinois Wesleyan University, where he oversees research and analytics for the Advancement Office.

This book is a must.

it's excellent. it's the best textbook about Mathematica I have ever read. And I am a Mathematica user since Version 1. That is more than 25 years. And even after writing a lot of programs, packages and personal functions, I still find it useful for me. Imagine the usefulness for a beginner..
In all these long 25 years I purchased a good number of texts about Mathematica, in addition to all the manuals Wolfram published till version 5.,including Reference Guides.
Books written by Gray, Glynn, Ruskeepaa,, Maeder, Blachman, Trott, Wellin, Shaw, Tigg, all excellent books, but, in my opinion, not written with the new users in their mind. Let me ask you. Do you tried ever to read a Dictionary?. Your answer will most probably be : NO. You don't read dictionaries. You open them only when you need them.. That's the case with the majority of these texts. You open them when you need to learn how to deal with a command you are interested in when writing your code. These books try to be exhaustive, but it is impossible to be exhaustive with a system like Mathematica.
This Hands-on-Start to Wolfram Mathematica is the first book about Mathematica I really enjoyed reading, and not opening it only to learn a specified command. New users will surely enjoy reading it and in the meanwhile learn a lot, without being intimidated by the complexities of Mathematica. For me, the most impressive achievement of the authors is the user friendly way they wrote this book, due surely to their profound interest to help the readers understand how to use Mathematica. Of course the book do not try to be exhaustive. It would be impossible.trying to be.exhaustive and at the same time be a book that teach how to start using Mathematica. I hope the authors will continue with their efforts to teach
new users, and also not so new ones. how to take the best Mathematica has to offer..

Great book to begin learning Mathematica

After going through the first hundred pages, I felt obliged to write a review to advise anyone new to Mathematica to buy this book. I have been through several other books which have been useful, but this book covers many critically important topics that are not covered elsewhere. Other books focus on using the Mathematica language for input and leaves you trying to memorize commands and how they are used. But by using free form input, autocompletion, command templates, suggestion bars, learning how to work with units, etc, you will accelerate your ability to solve problems. In addition I've not seen word processing and typesetting explained elsewhere. I've only glanced through the rest of the book, but it equally informative.

Wolfram's Hand-On Start to Wolfram Mathematica is a much needed introduction to Mathematica 10. It's been a good long time since Wolfram published a manual to its computational masterpiece so this certainly helps a lot. This is a workbook that hobbyists and professionals can learn the basics of Mathematica. Mathematica is a huge program with nearly 5,000 functions. The last time Wolfram produced a hard copy manual was Mathematica Book, Fifth Edition. With 1464 pages it went over all the functions of the for the Mathematica 5.0 and came out in 2003. It was truly an math encyclopedia. It was also quite well written and an excellent textbook. In the intervening twelve years the number of functions has more than doubled. So a manual like the Mathematica Book would be a true encyclopedia with over five thousand pages. So, the manual is now part of the extensive help menu along with a library of pdf books. Some of us would still prefer a paper edition. This fills that need.

The text is divided into two parts, the first part goes over the basics of mathematica. How to use the program. The Wolfram language conventions. How to use the word processor function, graphs, and how to create demostrations. The second part is a closer examination of various concepts in depth. Such as algebraic manipulation, calculus, export and import of data. Since Mathematica keeps everything and only makes additions to the big program, users of older editions of Mathematica can still find a lot of good information. The text is clear with wide margins, the authors used color effectively, and pointed the Mathematica user to resources contained online and in the program itself. This is a must have book for any Mathematica user. I recommend it highly.

Very cute book, awesome ideas. Be careful when you bake the chocolate chip cookies, there is a misprint. Ours came out VERY salty and after watching Ro's video, we realized the book calls for salted butter and 2 teaspoons baking soda (it should be 1 teaspoon according to the video and the butter was not specified so maybe try unsalted butter).

I ordered this for my 12 year old daughter and she cried tears of joy when it came! This book is AMAZING!!! Rosanna Pansino you have knocked this out of the park! My daughter is also a visual learning and this book has so many great step by step photographs! Every Recipe has 6 photographs. There are templates, a list of all the tools you need, and it's easy to read. You will NOT be disappointed, as my daughter said she could look at this book for hours and we can't wait to try out the lava cake for her 12th birthday! We are looking forward to having her book signed at the event hear in Orlando next week. Thank you for encouraging my daughter to keep baking! One happy Mommy here!

A interesting read

This book is really hard to describe. Without spoiling it
Now if your reading this review you've properly heard of Patrick Combes.
A motivational speaker and now a well known figure financially
The story is true which makes it all the more amazing and funny
You properly have a bank account or a credit card. Now personally I've never had a great account just a average one and my interest has always been low to nil. So this story made me laugh as at first it seemed like a bit of revenge,
but it's really about such more than that.
basically Patrick receives a fake check and decides to put it in his account for a joke and then the bank cashes it
Surprised he expects the money to go soon but is told its legally his as the check has not been bounced in the legal time period. Sounds great it's to,late to legally get the money back off him so he's good right? Wrong the bank realises they messed up and refuse to admit guilt. They expect Mr Combes to just give up, they underestimate him
What follows is a complicated and often funny tale which makes you think about how much you really understand the system we all use daily
I don't want to spoil the outcome but what I liked about this book aw Mr Combes honesty, as much as I admire this guy he did some daft things in this book but hey O'd have done it worse. It's easy to say that if you have the facts patrick is an honest and funny narrator. He jumps from big things to discussions with his brother and family. It's also interesting to see his motives aren't the money but simply for acknowledgement
He even laments that cashing the check properly was a daft thing to,do but refuses to be pushed around
I know it sounds like he's in the wrong cashing the check but the thing so many people forget is it was a joke and to top all that off Patrick breaks no laws. Me I would give in without question. I'm afraid of offending authority, Patrick is just an ordinary guy but he's very brave. That's why this book,is,worth reading

I loved Man 1 Bank 0!

I read this story before it was published. I howled and marveled at the preposterous behavior of the bank as well as Patrick testing the system by depositing the advertising check. I myself have sent those kind of letters in the mail. Apparently, my check letter wasn't as real as the one Patrick received. I also purchased Patrick's DVD by the same name - very entertaining and a story you will share with friends and family.

Patrick nailed it in this final version of completely telling his "Epic" story of the 95,000 junk mail check he cashed as a joke! Mighty Mighy brave story telling, and exceptionally great writing style. It's a whirlwind of a tale and totally true. Fantastic to read all the way through, excellent pace and keeps you laughing all the way till the end!

Another great Grisham read

My first Grisham book was A Time to Kill. It was also probably my favorite. In recent months, I've read four or five Grisham novels, and was starting to feel less slightly impressed with one of my favorite writers. However, I had preordered this a few months back, so I read it. I'd say it was every bit as good as A Time to Kill, and my favorite Grisham novel in many years. It took some thinking to develop this plot. Enjoy!

Great Christmas read!

What a great story! In some of the reviews I noticed some folks said the book was implausible. It's fiction folks! If the book was just about somebody's average life... how boring would that be? I will also admit (publicly) the ending brought tears to my eyes. I can't remember that happening over a book or movie in many years. This book is short enough to be easily read between now and Christmas. Mr. Grisham, thank you for writing great books that NEVER pander to the lowest common denominator of human behaviors. I appreciate that I can recommend any of your books to friends and family without shame!

Very Good Story

I didn't like this book as much as some of Mr. Grisham's books but it was pretty good. His character development was very good, as usual. He is one of our best storytelling & many of us appreciate the entertainment he provides.

In his first book, the genial cohost ("from the right") of CNN's popular Crossfire details his adventures in the political business and in television, from the enlightening to the downright hilarious. Given Carlson's conservative label, some readers may be wary. That would be a mistake. Politicians is not about bashing liberals (indeed, Carlson admits that his Ober-liberal cohost James Carville is "one of my favorite people"), but about the colorful and at times irreverent people who make politics so interesting-and entertaining. The author reserves his criticism for stuffy politicians who take themselves too seriously, and he lavishes praise on those who make good on-air guests. Among these is the convicted former Ohio congressman, James Traficant, "because he was willing to appear on television drunk." Carlson's montage is packed with golden political nuggets ("if you're going to be shallow, I've always thought you'd better be amusing") as well as the secret to his success (just let people talk and they will tell you everything you need to know) and funny glimpses behind the scenes at live TV, including the producer from hell, the "seven forbidden words" on television and "easy turns," the "publicity hounds" without whom, he says, talk shows could not exist. At times, it's difficult to tell if Carlson is being serious or pulling your leg, but that is part of his charm. Anyone with a sense of humor will find this chronicle thoroughly enjoyable, and political junkies will likely laugh out loud more than once.

Carlson is the conservative team member, the guy in the bow tie, on CNN's political-debate program Crossfire. His book is both memoir and commentary on current politics and the media--all with a slant, of course. Although many readers will disagree with his attitudes and precepts, everyone has to admit he is a good storyteller, intelligent and witty and sure of himself. He recalls his climb to his current TV position, which included formative time spent on the CNN show Spin Room. In the process, we certainly learn how cutthroat the television world is. Never averse to expressing an opinion, Carlson offers his own interesting philosophy on how to behave in front of a camera, which includes the maxim that "arguing a position you don't really support is a sure way to wind up loathing yourself. Plus, genuine conviction makes for a good debate. Phoniness is easy to spot." And this, too: "As the host, it's up to you to decide what happens on the show. And no matter what the producer says, you have the power to do it." The bottom line is, of course, that readers' gut-level responses will depend on which side of the liberal-conservative spectrum they find themselves. Librarians should expect demand. Brad Hooper

Entertainment, Education, and Great Gossip!

I'm not a TV or celebrity junkie, but I have often wondered about the personal characteristics of many public figures. This book lays them out. Flat. And with style, grace, and humor. Carlson has the obligatory section on Monica Lewinsky, for example, but he focuses on her California doctor instead of what we have been told by the media, ad nauseum. And what a doctor! Then there are portraits of others, from Senator McCain to Bill Press, all surely accurate (Carlson is, after all, a journalist) and vastly entertaining. His great gift, however, is to paint a brilliant picture of a personality without being snide or vicious. He even portrays himself. In fact, the scene of Carlson edging over the fat sleeping Moroccan gent to try to get back to his cramped airline seat - and landing on the screaming guy's lap... I'm laughing out loud again as I write this. That scene alone is worth the modest price of this book. It is a 5 star read, perfect for a Christmas gift. I only wish it was longer -- and no, you can't borrow mine.

I watched Tucker give a preview of his book on C-Span at the Miami Book Fair and couldn't wait to order the book. It was great from page 1 but when I got to page 142 I just couldn't believe what I was reading. Mr. Carlson is totally believable so I have no doubt this is an accurate account.
I hope he writes a book like this every year as he does have a knack for interacting with some real "characters" in and around the world of politics and the media.

Pre-2003 Political Gossip, But Fakery of News Talk Shows Probably Still True

Extremely out of date now. This guy revels in being a wise ass and doesn't correct people who make incorrect assumptions about who he is, as if he enjoys watching people be embarrassed, and he dangerously replies to crazy fan mail. Wonder if he does that with email. This book ends in 2003, so it is pre-social media. He names names, and at first I thought, he must be using different names, otherwise, these people would sue him, but I don't see a preface saying that. What is sad to hear, and what I suspect continues to be true, is how pre-rehearsed these news talk shows are, how people are told in advance what positions to take and what to say, and even instructed on their ear pieces on what to say. And that there are daily conference calls frequent talk-show guests where they get their talking points for the day. That explains why so many of them use the exact phrases. Politicians are profoundly corrupt, and the news media is mostly drunk.
