From Far Away, Volume One is a lovely little shoujo manga by Kyoko Hikawa. The art is simple, yet imaginative and skilled. The story is about a shy junior high school girl named Noriko who accidentally finds herself in a strange and fantastic land. Her only companion is a handsome, mysterious warrior named Izark. Noriko must learn to trust Izark completely, because she is completely helpless, lacking any fighting or athletic skills, and she does not speak the native language. Nor does Izark speak hers.

Izark knows why Noriko has come to his land, but she does not. He refers to her as something called The Awakening. But far from being benevolent, The Awakening is supposed to awaken the Sky Demon, and bring destruction to the land. Izark knows Noriko might have to be killed. But he knows she is innocent, and feels compelled to help her.

Throughout the book, several more hunks are introduced, including the slightly androgynous and divinely gorgeous Lord Rachef (ok, the names in this book aren't very good) and a blond trader who helps Noriko and Izark.

The art is clever. The series reminds me of a good cartoon you might see from the 70's or 80's on American Saturday morning TV, rather than a modern anime.

Lacking in this book is any kind of bio of or notes by the author. Most mangas have periodic sidebars where the author writes informative entries. Here there is absolutely no clue to the person behind the art and story. It feels like it was written by a ghost.

I had actually read this story in another form (with different charaters*) and wanted to see how that story stayed true to form... and it did and i love it... i will have to find a husband who can afford my manga habit...Hey, there are worse habits.... i recommend this manga to all who read manga...

Essential reading for product development teams

We're past the stage of users putting up with the flashing "12:00" on a VCR, impossible to program recording times, and cryptic computer operating systems. But as users expect easier and easier to use interfaces, new problems arise: how do designers know what users have become habituated to? How to introduce a new feature? How to simplify (make easier) a currently accepted user interface?

These questions aren't ones that can be settled without significant thought, group activity, and research. They require a new set of skills and understanding. It's no longer just about the features -- because an easy-to-use interface is itself a necessary feature.

And because customer feedback has become so rapid -- a series of negative Amazon reviews can wreck a product's sales -- it is so important to be able to predict what users want, before they run into problems that turn them off from a product forever. (Word of mouth becomes more and more powerful every year, with wider range and greater longevity -- reviews, social media, and blogs all have lasting influence.)

So project groups need to be equipped to properly create and design new products according to the new user interface expectations. (In this way this book is a great companion to The Practice of Creativity: A Manual for Dynamic Group Problem-Solving.)

Here's a rundown of the book's two-part format:

Part I: Ease of Use
-Functionality: Does it do what it says on the tin?
-Responsiveness: Does the website give you feedback when you interact with it?
-Ergonomics: Are the controls easy to access -- eg. big buttons.

-Foolproof: Is it easy to break, or can an idiot muddle their way through easily?

-Understandability: Does a user know what will probably happen before starting a particular interaction?

Simple, But Good

First I want to address the 1 star review. The PRICE of a book has nothing to do with the quality and value of the content. Yes, the kibble price could be lower but the goal with E-books isn't to save the world, it's to make money. They are succeeding with that.

On to the book itself.

I like it. While there is nothing really life-changing between the covers, it's certainly worth a read and a browse. The book is more of a reminder than an innovator---locate the restroom signs opposite the elevator rather than along side so people can see the sign when they step off---makes sense. If you are new to this sort of thinking, you'll love the book. There are a lot of pictures. But if you are well read on the usability subject, well, you might find this a little light.

I want to see usability studies for seniors. Every watch a senior at an airport? There is a whole area of overlooked usability opportunity: senior travel.

I liked the book enough to get an extra to give away. If I don't like a book, I won't give it away. So get this and enjoy it.

BTW, a huge plus is the international flavor of the book. We need to consider cultural differences and this book addresses that topic nicely.

In this easy to read and incredibly thorough book, Reiss accompanies the reader on an exploration of good and bad design practices and teaches us how to recognize, avoid and remedy common and not-so-obvious usability issues. The book is chock-full of examples and case studies which clearly demonstrate general principles of usability and specific guidelines alike.

The content is organized clearly in two main sections, "Ease of Use" and "Elegance and Clarity" and every chapter contains helpful references to further reading and a glossary of term and/or concept to explore in order to gain additional insight into any given issue. I find myself referring to these references over and over, and I have gone as far as and passing them along to clients in order to further illustrate a point.

However, what sets "Usable Usability" apart from most other books on usability is the attention devoted to both the digital and physical realm. As the practice of UX has evolved in the direction of creating truly cross-channel experiences, Reiss' book is uniquely positioned to address the specific challenges that UX/UI designers face on a daily basis when dealing with experiences that span different domains.

A Classic - But Limited

Got this for my son. A GREAT basic book and covers many fundamentals. But it is very old-school and relies alot on verbal narrative - not as many pictures or up-to-date examples (but what can you expect?) Supplement with other more modern texts and lots of DVDs of Terry Fater and Jeff Dunham.

Bergen tells us "there is no deep, dark mystery about Ventriloquism" and exposes the secrets and Illusions of Near and Distant Ventriloquism, figure making as well as the start of his showbiz companion Charlie McCarthy. A book well worth reading and a history worth knowing.

Old school book for the modern age

From the get go, when you open the first page you can tell this book was written long ago. It is full of good info on the art of Ventriloquism, and handpuppets or stage performance. I think given the age it was written, you must take the jems of knowlege and try and apply them to today as best you can. I did like the brief history on the art, also Edgar Bergin, was the top of his day. His daughter should be proud of him. I think if you can look past the time this was written, you will enjoy the read.

From a successful applicant's point of view, this book is awesome.

I applied to medical school this past cycle and matriculated this year at a top 20 school. As a successful applicant, I have to say that Insider's Pre-Med Guidebook is probably your best resource out there for a roadmap to getting into medical school, from selecting your undergraduate institution all the way to choosing which school to go to after you've been admitted. As a pre-med, you definitely will hear a LOT of conflicting advice from a lot of different sources - from SDN to your school counselors to older students - which can be really confusing and overwhelming at times. I think that this book basically sums up all the GOOD advice that's out there, probably because it's WRITTEN BY ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE MEMBERS working in tandem with the students they advised over the years who got into medical school.

After the long and grueling process of acquiring experience to be a competitive applicant and then applying to medical school, I've learned a lot about the process, and this book has been VERY ACCURATE. It will tell you what distinguishes a strong from a weak applicant, and it does so in a very organized, well-written, straightforward manner. It will give you practical advice. I used a lot of resources during my application process, and I think this book is the best one out there, better than MedEdits and So, You Want to Be a Physician (both of which are sort of outdated in my opinion). This book is also a good way to judge/offset the advice you get from your own schools' career counselors, which may not be the most accurate.

In summary, this book is great, and you should definitely take a peek if you want to get into medical school. I think it's unfortunate that the application process is so competitive for poor students who just want to help people and better humanity. This book will help you out :)

Great Resource for Everyone Interested in Going to Medical School

Very informative guidebook in helping navigate the complex road to medical school. I appreciated how the authors' address the question "how to determine if medicine is right for me?". A question I think everyone student should ask before embarking on this major life decision. This book outlines each step of the process from college course load, GPA, MCAT,volunteer work, how to apply, personal statement, recommendations, interviews, wait lists, to acceptances and much more. It also includes information for minority, older and disadvantaged applicants. I found the "horror stories" of what not to do during the interviews very helpful because they are real life scenarios from the authors' experiences sitting on med school admission committees. The charts are easy to understand and offer an honest look at what each medical school requires. I have purchased this book for my own teenage children and have recommended this book to other parents who have children interested in medicine.

Highly Recommended! - Gives Specific Advice from Experts

Based on a recommendation from a friend, I bought this book for my niece in high school who is considering a career in medicine. Before giving it to her, I thought I’d look through the first few pages to make sure it was worth her time. Well, before I knew it, I was reading the entire book! It’s a real easy read full of insightful commentary and specific advice on how to prepare for a career in medicine. It goes through each facet of a med school application in detail to maximize an applicant’s chances of getting in. I especially liked how it goes through specific action plans for different scenarios. I’d highly recommend this book for anyone considering going into medicine.
