I Hate Mysteries

I think I would have rated this a 5 if there hadn't been some editorial slipups. Grammar and use of words that are spelled correctly but not the one intended occasionally cropped up.

I hate mysteries. I read Unsettled Matters, Davis Miller's book, Bruce Thomas' book, and Linda's books. I've read all of the interviews and many of the documents at Divine Wind. I've viewed YouTube videos and watched the interviews with the 2 doctors who treated Lee in May, 1973. I never bought into the conspiracy theories, and the Equagesic seemed too neat a solution. The doctors' interviews, especially their claim that they expected to see Lee back in the ER in a short time, were compelling and the notion that Lee had gotten hold of bad hashish was attractive.

This book is a literature review done by a 3rd party medical professional. It offers reasonably accessible (for the layperson) explanations of the various theories that are not reliant on jargon. The conspiracy theories are laid to rest, which will not please the tinfoil crowd. The author corresponded with Bleecker and challenges Bleecker's assumptions regarding Lee's condition. The approach is logical and methodical, addressing the details about Lee's appearance, behavior, medical issues, and the limitations in the 70s of making a solid diagnosis of back injuries. At the end of the day the detailed explanations leave me believing that the hash wasn't it. The Equagesic kicked off the sequence of events in Lee's system leading to his death.

The author notes he reached out to the Bruce Lee Foundation and received no response. There is no way to know if his emails were received or simply ignored, which he acknowledges. My sense is that the family doesn't want to talk about this, they consider the matter closed. However, I believe the author made a useful point about the value of systematically saving, documenting, and analyzing the medical records. Unless and until that is done the speculation, and the hype, will continue unabated. I prefer the truth.

This book is a counterpoint to Unsettled Matters and worth owning based on its medical analysis.

A Fascinating Book!!!!

This is the most logically written book regarding Lee's passing. If you have ever read Tom Bleecker's Unsettled Matters, this book methodically debunks several of Bleecker's faulty assumptions. In addition, the author logically debunks several misconceptions associated with Lee's passing.

My son read this book already 3 times and said it was awesome and that he loved it. Also said he would recommend to other kids.

Great book!

This is such a great book! I received it, brand new, just as I had expected. My little brother loves these book and I was so happy to get this one at such a great price. He is 11 years old, and is a huge fan of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. It was the first, and so far the only, book we have been able to get him to have any interest in. Not only did he take an interest it it, though. he fell in love! It's so cool because we have never been able to get him to take a liking to reading. Thanks to the amazing work of Jeff Kinney, my little brother has now become a Diary of a Wimpy Kid fanatic. Kinney's writing style has the ability to draw young readers in and keep their interest. Not only my little brother, but a young boy that I babysit, who shares the same opinion of reading with my brother, is also madly obsessed with this series. These books are incredible and Kinney is a truly amazing author. Had it not been for this book series, I'm honestly not sure if my brother would have ever decided to like to read, but now, because of Jeff Kinney, I know for sure that he loves it.

Three and a half stars

It was pretty much similar to all the other books. It's not one of those books that you get hooked to, and can't wait for the movie to come out like the Hunger Games series and the Divergent series. But its better for younger kids around 3rd grade or so. Maybe older kids might read it just for fun or if they're bored or something like that. But I kinda think the author is running out of ideas since this is the 8th book and all. It doesn't have very much suspense, though. And, that's the biggest thing I look forward to into a book. So, if you like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, I think this might be okay to read. Thank you for reading my opinion of this book.

Enhance you Exception Reporting

I have worked as an operating CFO and division controller for large divisions of several Fortune 100 companies for over 15 years. Today my focus is on recovery auditing, mainly in the accounts payable area, as it is the most fruitful area for savings in an organization.
In my years of experience I have found that increased use of regular exception reporting on the integrity of transactions offers the best assurance that the reporting is accurate and that no "surprises" are lurking in the records. ACL software has become an invaluable tool to me for this use. I have monthly and quarterly exception reporting routines established. The reports provide me with areas of potential concern for further drill down analysis. The great thing about this routine is that it helps me to: (1) spot erroneous transactions that were merely keyed incorrectly; (2) enhance the profitability of our business; and (3) highlight areas of potential fraud for my review.
ACL Software offers numerous standardized tests that can be used with some training and development on your part. I have spent some time developing my own routines. But I don't have time to develop all the routines I want to use. It is just not the best use of my time. My company has purchased several "bolt-on" applications to work with ACL. These applications allow for quick start-up and they bring the expertise of the developer immediately to your tool box. Essentially, I have tools similar to those used by either our internal or external auditors. But I don't have to go through the extra efforts to compile the reports on an annual basis. I can see the results monthly and head off any problems that may be developing.
One such inexpensive bolt-on that I use consistently is the Payables Test Set for ACL by Richard B. Lanza. The bolt-on to ACL is only $200 and for that I get:
* All of the pre-written scripts (a.k.a. batches) in ACL;
* A menu system in ACL to easily select the script I desire; and
* A book to walk me through an entire audit of accounts payable with descriptions of each script. The script descriptions not only tell me what data to get and how the script will run but also why I should use it in an audit and what to do with the results.
The routines and exception reports provided in the test set allow me to easily check numerous areas. Below are my top reports (although the Payables Test Set provides over 30):
1) Test that we are maximizing vendor discounts. The reports highlight vendors that may be getting favorable treatment by our accounts payable staff.
2) Check for potential duplicate payments to vendors.
3) Test to see if we can maximize volume purchase by viewing vendor activity across department and location boundaries.
4) Confirm vendor invoiced terms versus our negotiated/P.O. terms.
5) Assure proper authorization of payments.
6) Monitor input activity by AP operator.
7) Summarize debit memos to review for adjustments to the sub-ledger and identify potential unknown liabilities if the debit memo is no longer valid.
8) Identify any payments made to vendors that do not currently exist, or never existed, in the vendor master-file. I know, you think this can't happen. Well, it can.
9) Check payroll address information against vendor address information for any similar addresses. This routine is exceptional. It does not just look for exact matches. It looks for similarities. If you have a fraudster in your organization, they may try to send vendor payments to a name or address similar to their own. This routine will flag it for your review.
In summary, I strongly recommend the use of automated analytic review of your company's transactions. The power of ACL combined with the Payables Test Set is a valuable component in this mix. In relation to reports sold by software vendors costing tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, the Payables Test Set provides an inexpensive and "out of the box" solution, even for the less experienced ACL user. While such bolt-on reports are never a substitute for the auditor's creative mind, they do assist in jump-starting an audit and ensuring the basics are covered right out of the gate... all for under the cost of a good departmental lunch!

A not-Plato "Symposium."

Who knew that the "Symposium" featured in the famous and widely quoted Platonic dialogue was an actual event? In this volume we get Xenephon's commentary on the same dinner party. The Platonic dialogue is more interesting, penetrating, and more focused (on love, among other topics) but Xenephon has points to make. If you did not already know, you will see why Plato is is held in such high esteem and Xenephon a lesser light. The charming Alcibiades is absent from this Symposium. I have not read the remainder of the volume with real attention.

Very nicely sized, with the original text parallel to the english translation. Binding is fantastic, and the book looks elegant. The chosen translations are great as well. Aside from a 5 sticker high barcode-stack on the back of the book it looked brand new.
