totality and the flux

The central questioning of Radical Hermeneutics revolves around the question of the flux, the contingent, flowing reality that philosophy has traditionally tried to stem/structure and receives explicit attention in the philosophy of Husserl, Parmenides, Kierkegaard, etc. Caputo follows Derrida who follows Levinas in pointing out the totalizing quality of systematic, speculative thought (which structures the flow). A similar argument runs through Kierkeggaard, e.g. Climacus' questioning as to when the promised grand plan will arive. Caputo is outlining a strand of the inversion of Platonic thoughts, the stress on Becoming instead of Being. He continues what Climacus' started in making things more difficult for a culture and time that focuses on making things easier.

Caputo himself would recognize he doesn't have the final word. inherent in his project is the need for further deconstruction and loosening. His harsh treatment of Gadamer gets rethought in his "more radical hermeneutics". Recommended, challanging. Read in combination with Rorty.

So what next, after this 'book' has 'ended'?

The philosophical systems of Western philosophy are a 'fast way out of the difficulties of life', the author argues. Metaphysics is a betrayal of this fact, as it seeks to 'put the best face on existence', and make things look easy. Hermeneutics, via the deconstructive project, on the contrary, seeks to 'recapture the hardness of life' and therefore not seek 'the fast way out of the back door of the flux'. The author wants to carry through Heidegger's project in Being and Time and 'restore the original difficulty of 'Being'. It is a hermeneutic project that begins with Heidegger as 'radical thinking' and follows the process of its radicalization, keeping faith to the 'philosophers of the flux': Nietzsche, Heidegger, Kierkegaard, Husserl, and Meister Eckhart.
Regardless if one is in agreement with the author, his utterances have become fashionable as of late, and not just in hideaway cafes in Europe, but in professional circles of philosophy. However alien the ideas may seem in this book, it is an undeniable fact they grew out of Western philosophy. They are not a 'logical' consequence, but a consequence of the rebellion against rational 'system building', this rebellion beginning in the nineteenth century. The system builders of Western philosophy, such as Plato, Aquinas, Kant, and Hegel, sought a comprehensive view of existence, a view that holds to the idea that reality is understandable, and meaningful, and can be expressed via a rational framework.
But ideas when entrenched encourage playful and sometimes radical antithesis. The mistake that the system builders made was that they assumed the systems they constructed were closed, comprehensive in their scope, and not needing further development. Settling into a local minimum, their ideas were jostled from without by those who caution against their sterility. Delighting in the use of philosophical wrecking balls, these new philosophers were all too willing to demolish the huge edifices built by the philosophers of old. Dancing with ecstacy after the damage was done, they then proposed a new viewpoint, one that attempts to accept the dynamism of Being, and not assume the existence of any epistemic or ontological fixed points.
Thus the author wallows in this new (anti?)structure. To paraphrase a line from the book, his ideas (organize?) themselves into ferocious animals and then descend upon (philosophy), devouring everything in their path. The author holds up the Heidegger primordial 'Verstehen' as that which allows knowledge to work itself out in the process of existence. Reality for the author is a collection of torrential currents, extreme perturbations, and circumstances that shape the situation, and which consequently 'Verstehen' provides interpretive insight.
Metaphysics, says the author, must be kept in check, so that it does not dominate the text, arrest the play, recenter the system, and stabilize the flux. This will break the code, and reintroduce the nostalgiac longing for the origin. Thus metaphysics must undergo a 'radical hermeneutics', somewhat along the lines of Jacques Derrida in holding to the 'uselessness of signs' and a rejection of 'a priori grammar'. We need our fictions, the author argues, for we cannot function 'without the wildness of play'. Imposing normality is a measure of stilling the flux. Authority must always be interrogated, and our fixation on repetition, those temporary stabilizations of the flow must not be mistaken for a grounding of normality in principle.
Reason, for the author, is a central power, held by the military, industrial, and scientific authorities of administered society. What 'should' we do then? The author's answer is an 'ethics of dissemination', which arises precisely from the foundering of metaphysics. The morality of the author is be one of a 'community of mortals', which is held together by common fears and lack of metaphysical foundation. Huddling together in the face of the chilling hermeneutics, humility and compassion are the (natural?) consequences, according to the author. After all, 'we do not know who we are', he concludes.
After reading this book, one might ask: so what next in the history of philosophy? Deconstruction has reacted with enthusiasm against metaphysics, but it has also now been codified and transformed itself into an ethic. Once dancing freestyle, it has now a precise set of choreographic principles, not to be deviated from. Once intoxicated with recklessness and shaking a stick, it has now become static doctrine, with all the 'rigidities' of the metaphysics it felt the need to rebel against.
Philosophy has not ended, nor should it. But what form will it take next in this, the most dynamic of all centuries? The technological flux of the 21st century is so far unequaled. Perhaps we can take a hint from both metaphysics and the radical hermeneutics of the author: we can drench ourselves with the overwhelming torrential flood of change, knowing full well that, using our signs, our symbols, our logic, it is we ourselves that create these changes.

Radical Rhetoric is good.

Caputo has flare, though maybe an axe to grind. There are some brillant pages in this book, especially Caputo's discussions of Husserl, and later (the begining of chapter 5) Husserl and Derrida. He also does a fine job showing how the Heidegger of On Time and Being relates with deconstruction (though I think he might even go farther). However, most of this book seems to give us a "noiseless Aufhebung", telling us how we must have difficult lives in order to get ride of the big bad metaphyics of presence. Fair enough, there are many problems with all systems (even Derrida's "system"), yet no one deny life is hard. Kierkegaard and Derrida are not the only ones to show us this, and certainly Gadamer (a philosopher Caputo really seems to have an axe to grind with) doesn't think we have an easy time of it.
In general, Caputo does a decent job of introducing themes, but I would suggest reading Kierkegaard, Husserl, Heidegger and Derrida (and especially Hegel) before one listens to Caputo.

He holds the Wolfson Research Merit Award from the Royal Society and has published more than 160 papers and 10 book chapters. He is the author of The Structure of Complex Networks: Theory and Applications, published by Oxford University Press (OUP) in 2011. Professor Estrada is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Complex Networks published by OUP. His research interests are in the mathematical analysis of networks, the use of physical analogies to study networks and applications of network theory to society, chemistry, biology, ecology and engineering.

Philip Knight is a Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Strathclyde, UK. He obtained his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Manchester in 1993 and has spent most of his career carrying out research into matrix algebra. His interest in applications drew him inexorably towards network theory and his research interests now centre on the algebraic structure of networks as well as on the use of networks to represent other mathematical structures. More recently, Dr Knight has been involved in teaching courses on network theory in different countries and is well regarded among students for his expository abilities.

Best of the series so far

This was the best book in the series so far as it answered a lot of my questions and a few secrets were revealed that explained the characters better. Clary, Simon and Jace got the validation they needed and the story did not focus on just Jace and Clary and their tormented relationship. I wish someone would start training Clary so she could be a real shadow hunter and not just have to rely on her powers which are intermittent at best. Jace seemed the typical broody "woe is me" boyfriend and I much prefer him in the first book as he was more decisive and less moody than in this one. I do agree with another review that the plot line where they were thought to be brother and sister was unnecessary and only tainted the characters relationship going forward and it does play in the back of your mind sometimes. We were introduced to new characters and I really liked the Queen of the Fairies. She hinted at other secrets that Valentine neglected to mention. Cold and Calculating she did lack empathy yet once her condition was met, Clary was released and the love triangle was no more. Some plot lines were predictable and I would have liked a better fight scene for the evil Valentine and Sebastian but that is just my opinion. Simon has really come into his own and for a minor character he is quite interesting as there is a lot going on with him and I am curious to find out where he goes from here and who will he end up with. Overall it was a better book and although this was a trilogy in the beginning I am going to see where the characters go from here.

It goes without saying that I am a lover of books. Stories, characters, and delicious prose...well...these are things that I throw myself into. My shelves are filled with countless books that i have read and loved, stories that I have enjoyed reading.
I have never enjoyed reading a book as much as I enjoyed this one. Never.

It's a scary thing when you get to the final book in a series or trilogy that you particularly care about. There's a certain amount of apprehension involved,correlating directly to your emotional involvement to the story and characters. Its tricky for the author to wrap things up in a way that is true to the characters, consistent with the themes of the previous books, ties up the major and minor story arcs, and is still enjoyable to read. I've never read the final book in any series that managed to seamlessly do all of those things. City of Glass did.

The characters in a story like this should be expected to change, to be affected by the events around them, and to react to them in some way. This was handled fantastically. Well done Cassandra Clare.

I loved the danger and intrigue and romance…

In an effort to save her mother, Clary journeys to the City of Glass to find a potion which will wake her up. The Clave has also called the Lightwoods and Jace to the city to testify regarding the events that occurred on Valentine’s ship. Jace is concerned that if the Clave knows what Clary is capable of, they will exploit her. He tricks her into staying home, but of course, she follows anyway and gets herself into trouble. Jace tries to be mean to her in order to force her away before the Clave finds out she is in the city. Hurt by his rejection, Clary accepts assistance from Sebastian, a handsome, let slightly creepy guy whose motives are questionable.

The Clave is also interested in how Simon, a vampire, is now able to go out in the sunlight. They throw him in a dungeon-like jail where he makes friends with a strange prisoner held in the next cell.

Now that Valentine has both the Mortal Cup and the Mortal Sword, everyone is anticipating him coming to Idris to capture the Mortal Mirror. It is known to be in Idris, but unfortunately, no one knows where it is. When Valentine threatens to attack the city, the Clave must decide whether to accept the help of the Downworlders against him.

I loved this book! I loved the danger and intrigue and romance… The only thing that was a bit irritating is that I figured out the ending way early and then had to watch the characters slog along until they figured it out. Even so, I still think this might be my favorite book in the series so far. One of the characters gets killed in the book, and it is heartbreaking. Several plot lines ended, giving me satisfaction, but I can see a few plotlines which will need to be resolved in the next book.

There are some twists and turns in the book that will surprise you, and make you laugh

Lady Killer is the second book to a series called Tangled Desires by Misti Murphy. This book is about two people who have a complicated situation in their lives that either have them on the run or searching for someone. They end up meeting one another, and their lives get even more complicated.

Enter Gemma, Gemma is part-time veterinarian who is on the run for her life from her ex-boyfriend trying to kill her. Running from place to place she is forced to change her name so that she stays under the radar. Signing up to a gym to release some stress, she didn’t expect to run into is Tom Hadley. Feeling more than attracted to him, she knows she cannot let herself fall for his charms, or let him get involved in her mess of a life.

This book is amazing, when you first start to read it, it grabs your attention right away. The author tends to switch between the two characters, so that you’re able to see from both of their view points. There are some twists and turns in the book that will surprise you, and make you laugh. I enjoyed the book and will be searching for the first book as well as the next one after this one. I advise you that when you read this book be somewhere, that no one will bother you. You won’t want to stop reading once you begin.

All sizzling hot and complete alpha males, the Hadley men will melt your heart and put butterflies in your stomach! We discover another side of Tom in "Lady Killer", his true nature and all his mysteries finally revealed. Surprising without being any less hot and steamy, Lady Killer is just a wonderful read!!!! Well written with a good plot, lots of twists and turns, i couldn't put it down!!! Misti Murphy does it again and offers us an amazing book! Two thumbs up in the air!!!!

Lady Killer is Book 2 in the Tangled Desres Series. It picks up a couple of weeks after the end of Prick Tease. Both are standalone novels that I recommend reading.

Lady Killer is the highly enjoyable story of Tom and Gemma finding their way through the minefield of their pasts to emerge stronger, confident of who they are and what they truly want, determined to meet all challenges head-on and never settle for less. They learn what people think they know to be true may be only illusion and never judge someone based solely on their reputation. By the end of the story they are both better people and I know they are truly committed to making HEA a reality.

The story is well-written, moves at a good pace, has likable characters, and held my attention from beginning to end. I am looking forward to Book 3: Cocky F@#ker, which will delve into the relationship of Mace and Chelsea. I highly recommend reading both Prick Tease and Lady Killer.

Generally good, some strange omissions

This book is generally good, using the same format as Winchester's Classic Military Aircraft. Lots of aircraft covered from all over the world in two page spreads. My only criticism is the non selection of certain aircraft which have some historical significance. The book contains multiple spreads of variants of the same aircraft. Five separate spreads on the Lockheed C-130 for example, as well as some less interesting types. Unfortunately missing is the Lockheed F-80, the North American B-45, the Martin B-57, the Northrup YB-49, the Douglas B-66,
the Douglas C-124 and the Fairchild C-119. Each reader will probably have his own list of omissions, but these aircraft are either significant, interesting of both. I would still recommend the book for the price.

'Modern Military Jets' book review.

As with the other books I purchased, this, too, is excellent. Being an avid model builder (among other hobbies and interests), I rely heavily on books, magazines, the internet, for images for color schemes of the models. I have a vast collection of books with information as well as photographs of world aircraft. This book is one of them. It is an excellent addition to anyone who engages in that hobby.
However, anyone who is searching for more detailed technical information such as materials, radars, radar angles, cross sections, and other such minute details, would be more comfortable relaying on 'Janes" books. For me, and my needs, this book is more than adequate.

MODERN MIITARY AIRCRAFT

First I am a builder of 1/144 th scale model aircraft. This book has been a great aid to that purpose. The book was printed in 2004, and a number of the aircraft reviewed have "retired"; IE the American Tomcat and the British Jaguar. Still it was a bargain, and well worth the cost.
