As a whole, including MAL, this is a Great Book

Separately, this book was boring, as I suppose most accounting books are. However, I purchased the Myaccountinglab.com software through Pearson publishing as a supplement (which was mandatory) and I can see why Managerial Accounting is so important.

The advantage of MAL is instantaneous feedback. Also there are condensed PowerPoints for each chapter that you can take notes on, along with demonstration document videos, and accounting simplified videos. Also, if you dare to adventure outside of the assigned homework problems, you can gain more problems via the study plan. The system is designed to be helpful as possible (if you take the time to use it to it's fullest capacity. MAL also provides a breakdown of time you've spent, which I would guess would be helpful for professors to track their students).

Also, I recommend getting a bound copy of the book as opposed to the loose leaf version, which I bought for the second edition. (Review on that to follow.)

I wish I was warned with the word problems. Managerial accounting is one word problem after the next about how to solve problems in the service, manufacturing or merchandising industries. I would have budgeted my time a little differently had I known this was a "word problem" type of class. Financial accounting was a breeze in comparison. This type of class should count as two classes, or a 5 to 6 unit class. One homework problem can sometimes take an hour, like financial accounting, but for me, financial accounting was a breeze. Most homework assignments that my teacher assigned were 10+ problems, taking anywhere from 3 to 11 hours to complete, averaging at about 7 hours. This class drove me to drink - lots of coffee)!!! I can't complain, I could see people in the real world, at companies using this as a reference guide because there are so many scenarios (chapter 8 example below). I'm grateful to learn how to solve problems, so I can't complain because this book with the extensive problems does just that.

Chapter 8 example of a homework problem:

Members of the board are surprised that the Industrial systems product line is losing money. They commission a study to determine whether the company should discontinue the line. Company accountants estimate that discounting industrial systems will decrease fixed costs of goods sold by $81,000 and decrease fixed marketing and administration expenses by $14,000.
Requirements
1.) Prepare incremental analysis to show whether Safety Systems should discontinue the industrial systems product line.
2.) Prepare contribution margin income statements to show Safety Systems' total operating income under two alternatives a.) with the industrial system line and b.) without the line. Compare the difference between the two alternatives' income numbers to your answers to Requirement 1. What have you learned from this comparison?

Good text book

I used this book in a principles of accounting course. It is very easy to follow along and explain the basics very well. This is important to have for beginner level courses because your structure and foundation will both follow you through your career. Braun does an excellent job of this! Thanks for helping me get an A!

a cheap alternative

a very cheap alternative to the 4th edition, and I did not even need the book for the class for the most part. I used it just about two times, and all the pages are clean, not torn, and seemed new!

Poor proofreading

I have the hardback version of The Mammoth Hunters, and I still love the writing and characters. Having said that, I was very perplexed by the lack of proof-reading in this Kindle version, based on the LARGE number of misspellings, punctuation errors and poor sentence structure. There were even spelling inconsistencies with a couple of character's names. I don't understand how these many errors were allowed without someone noticing. Editor? Any thoughts?

The first book was really good. When you read a series you don't need to go on and on with stuff from the first book. Who cares about the rock structures and strada and Jondular is a Jackass in this third book.

Series more than I expected.

My sister gave me a box of books when she moved. One of them was a huge hardcover book "The Plains of Passage". I read a few pages and liked it so I went to Amazon and discovered it was # 4 in a series. I ordered books # 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. I wanted "The Plains of Passage" in paperback because the original was so heavy. I just started to read it last night. I have not ordered book # 6 yet because of all the negative reviews but I will order it after all just to see for myself. Right along there has been a lot of repetition especially of terrain, plants, etc. I understand why the author felt she needed to do that. If I had just read one book in the middle of the series I would have needed background to understand the gist of the story.What if someone picks up book # 6 at Goodwill or other place that sells used books and has never read the previous 5 books? I have been known to buy books there on occasion. Readers are not being fair to the author to disparage book # 6 so much.They only need to skim the parts they already know about. Not everyone has read all 6 books. I plan to read and enjoy them all. I love the first 3 very much.

About the Author
Professor Peter C Gotzsche graduated as a Master of Science in biology and chemistry in 1974 and as a physician in 1984. He is a specialist in internal medicine; he worked with clinical trials and regulatory affairs in the drug industry 1975-83, and at hospitals in Copenhagen 1984-95. He co- founded The Cochrane Collaboration in 1993 and established The Nordic Cochrane Centre the same year. He became professor of Clinical Research Design and Analysis in 2010 at the University of Copenhagen. Peter Gotzsche has published more than 50 papers in 'the big fi ve' (BMJ, Lancet, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine and New England Journal of Medicine) and his scientifi c works have been cited over 10 000 times. Peter Gotzsche has an interest in statistics and research methodology. He is a member of several groups publishing guidelines for good reporting of research and has co- authored CONSORT for randomised trials (www.consort- statement. org), STROBE for observational studies (www.strobe- statement.org), PRISMA for systematic reviews and meta- analyses (www.prisma- statement.org), and SPIRIT for trial protocols (www.spirit- statement.org). Big pharma and the Mafia

One of the biggest canaries at the moment is Peter G�tzsche, none other than the head of the Nordic Cochrane Centre, the Scandanavian arm of the Cochrane Collaboration, an independent research and information centre committed to preparing, maintaining, and disseminating reviews of the various treatments of mainstream medicine and examining whether they have adequate evidence of safety and effectiveness. Cochrane was the first group of individuals to champion the notion of`evidence-based' medicine - that is, medicine shouldn't be used unless there's evidence that the stuff works.

G�tzsche is a guy after my own heart. When asked to speak at a Danish Society for Rheumatology event, called `Collaboration with the drug industry. Is it THAT harmful?' Peter's opening gambit was to highlight the fact that Pfizer, one of the meeting's sponsors, had been fined $2.3 billion in the US for promoting off-label use of four drugs, while Merck, the sponsor the year before, had been responsible for the deaths of thousands due to deceptive information about its arthritis drug.

G�tzsche's latest book, entitled Deadly Medicines and Organised Crime: How Big Pharma has Corrupted Healthcare' (Radcliffe Publishing Ltd) pulls even fewer punches. The book essentially makes the point that the drugs industry uses virtually every tactic used by the mob to sell its products.

He even quotes a former vice-president of Pfizer as saying, `It is scary how many similarities there are between his industry and the mob. The mob makes obscene amounts of money, as does this industry. The side effects of organized crime are killings and deaths, and the sides effects are the same in this industry. The mob bribes politicians and others, and so does the drug industry.'

Perhaps even more extraordinary than the careful case made by this blunt soothsayer is the fact that Richard Smith, the former editor of the British Medical Journal, agreed to write the book's foreword. In the book, Smith points out, the characteristics of organized crime include extortion, fraud, federal drug offences, bribery, embezzlement, obstruction of justice obstruction of law enforcement, tampering with witnesses and political corruption.

Medicine should be a gift to us all rather than a money-making scheme for the pharmaceutical industry, as it now largely is.

With that in mind, we suggest that the following be implemented.

An independent funding body should be created to finance all medical trials, whether of drugs, other forms of therapy or alternatives
Doctors should be required to spend one year of their five-year training learning about nutrition, alternative modalities and new possibilities
Drug-company influence should be entirely excluded from medicine, from training colleges and from trips abroad
Doctors should be rewarded for adopting non-drug therapies, thus saving the nation at least one small part of the �160 billion spent every year on drugs by the NHS.
But most of all, we need to open up the entire field of cancer--our understanding of what it is, what causes it and how it could be treated--while taking on board new understandings of the body and the impact upon it of the environment, stress and emotions. As a researcher once commented when asked whether research into alternative healing should continue, "We can't find the answers if we don't keep asking the questions."

We will shortly announce our campaign for freeing medicine from the pharmaceutical industry, so that doctors and patients alike are free to use an entire toolkit of modalities to get and stay well.

You will not see prescription medicines in quite the same way after reading this. Would have wished for a more scientific and less angry/polemical treatment. The data and the facts themselves will make people angry, and less of that from the author might have made for a better sense of an objective treatment.

As a clinician in the healthcare system for 35+ years, I have to validate the author's sense that healthcare, and indeed virtually every aspect of medicine, has been subjected to and distorted by the commercial agendas and almost unlimited greed of big Pharma. In particular, the abuses of the scientific method in relationship to psychotropic medicines are legion, a place where side effects are concealed and minimized (including very serious ones from neuroleptics) while benefits are blown up and exaggerated. You should read this to get the other side of the advertizing you have absorbed about any drug that you might be taking.

It offers a powerful argument that the current system is completely broken, and must be overhauled.

Over the last ten years, he has provided consulting services in B2B, B2C, B2E, data integration, and portal initiatives for banking, retail, accounting, manufacturing, and financial services. An early technology adopter, he frequently evaluates, recommends, and helps his clients use new technologies effectively. Bill has designed and helped build several award winning software packages. Bill is the co-author of O'Reilly's ADO.NET in a Nutshell and author of ADO.NET Cookbook.

is President of ProseTech, a software documentation consultancy, and a project manager at VoiceIQ (http://www.voiceiq.com/), a provider of software for interactive voice-enabled applications and services. Awesome reference manual

I bought the paperback in 2005 and used it heavily. Somehow I lost the paperback and now bought it again in kindle. Very well written reference manual and the best I have seen on the topic.

Excellent reference, and a good introduction to ADO

This book is classic O'Reilly. It's separated into three sections. The first being a thorough but brief introduction to all aspects of the API. The second section is an API reference. And the third a quick reference. This third section is included on the CD that comes with the book and will integrate into Visual Studio.
Don't expect the first section of the book, which is an introduction to ADO.NET to give you a gentle introduction to the subject. That's not the Nutshell form. If you don't know ADO at all you will want to buy both this book and an introductory book. If you know related APIs, or you know ADO.NET and you need a refresher or have weak spots you will find some new things in the first section. For me it was the support for disconnect access and also the integration with the XML features of SQL Server 2000.
Although this book stays true to the Nutshell form it is a little longer in the introduction than the usual. The introductory section is seventeen chapters and is almost half of the length of the book. So if you are an intermediate or advanced engineer I think you could probably learn enough ADO directly from this book without any other introductory book.

Incredible!

I've owned this book for 3 days and cannot put it down! I have not been a big fan of O'Reilly over the years, but this book is "incredible". It goes into the detail that most books seem to omit and it's those details that we "developers" desperately need.
I would recommend this book to ANY and ALL .NET developers who are writing code that hits against a database. There are topics covered in this book that Microsoft's own MSDN and VS.NET help system seem to fail at properly explaining. It's because of this that I've found myself (all too often) going to codeguru.com and google groups to get answers to ADO.NET questions that this book actually covers.
My hat goes off to authors Matthew MacDonald and Bill Hamilton on a job well done.
Coming from a Visual Basic background and now working in VB.NET and C#.NET, this book should satisfy both the VB.NET and C# developer.
