Slow down, enjoy the moment.

The book I read The Dash: Making a Difference with Your Life by Linda Ellis and Mac Anderson is a short one. In fact, it's filled with a lot of pictures and is based on a brief poem entitled "The Dash." It's the result of a project, really a labor of love, in which Anderson, the man behind the Successories brand, took a poem written by Ellis, and expanded on it in a unique way. You know Anderson's company from those beautiful inspirational one-word posters that exhort you to recognize the value of Discipline or Dedication or Attitude. They re so well-known you can probably picture one of his posters right now. Anderson turned his trademark approach to Ellis's poem to create a book that's very much like a collection of those posters in the first half and an exploration of what the words mean in the second half. I recently received this book as a gift and I'm so glad I did. Though the book isn't widely available any longer, you may be able to find it at independent bookstores, or second-hand on the Internet. I reviewed it anyway, because the message truly touched me. Even if you cannot get your hands on the book, I urge you to use Google to get the poem "The Dash."

The title of the poem refers to the dash in expression of the length of person's life, as in history books, in obituaries, or eulogies. And, the poem itself is written as if it's a eulogy that encourages those in attendance to think about what characterized the dash in a deceased person's life, for instance 1940 - 2010. Though the numbers we focus on are the birth date and the date of death, it's all that's represented by that little dash that is the real story of that person.

The question this book ends up asking, as does the poem, is: What did you do with the dash in your life? The book expands in the second half to share stories related to the stanzas of the poem. Life lessons about living in the dash. One of the very poignant examples is a story called "To A Child...Love is Spelled T.I.M.E." I found that story of the contrast between a father's recollections of certain days of his life and his son's. It's a compelling story that I took as such a strong reminder of keeping our focus on what's truly important in our lives.

Though you may not be able to purchase a copy of the book, with its inspiring photos and expansion of the poem, I urge you to seek out the story and the poem. I know that I will be keeping them handy as a reminder to myself as I rush along, keeping up with the demands of a modern life. If it reminds me even occasionally to slow down, enjoy the moment, and focus my attention on how I'm living my dash, it will be a wonderful addition.

About the Author

Dr. Gan-Lin Zhang graduated from Huazhong Agricultural University in 1987, with the Bachelor of Agronomy and obtained his PhD of Soil Science from Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993. He was promoted as professor of soil science in 2001. His research fields cover soil genesis, soil classification, soil mapping and soil evaluation. He is a grantee of the Distinguished Young Scientist Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation. He served as the Vice-Chair and the Chair of the Commission of Soil Genesis, International Union of Soil Science (C1.3, IUSS) during 2002 and 2014. He is now the vice-chair of the Working Group of Soils of Urban, Industrial, Traffic and Mining Areas (SUITMA), IUSS. He also served the Chair of the Committee of Soil Genesis, Classification and Geography (2004-2012), Soil Science Society of China. He is currently on the editorial board of Geoderma, Soil Use and Management, Science China (Earth Science), Acta Pedologica Sinica and Arid Zone Research. He is the leader of the East Asian Node of GlobalSoilMap.net Project and a member of the FAO Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soil (ITPS). He has authored (co-authored) a number of books and book chapters as well as more than 300 papers in Chinese and international peer-reviewed journals, covering soil genesis, soil classification, soil mapping, soil information system and soil quality evaluation, as well as urban soil and environment.

Dick J. Brus has studied geology and physical geography. He works at Wageningen University and Research Centre for 32 years. After his work on the geomorphological mapping of the Netherlands at scale 1:50,000 and on the Dutch Soil Classification System, in 1990 he moved to the field of pedometrics. His main fields of interest are sampling theory, geostatistics, (generalized) linear regression analysis and uncertainty analysis. He has rich research experiences in developing and applying statistical methods for natural resources inventory and monitoring. He has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed, international journals on these topics. He is second co-author of the book ’Sampling for Natural Resource Monitoring’, published in 2006 by Springer. This book is widely acclaimed in soil, earth, environmental, agriculture, and statistical sciences. He was the Vice-chair of the International Union of Soil Science commission Pedometrics. He was awarded Best Paper on Pedometrics in 1996, 2004 and 2011 by the Pedometrics Commission of the International Union for Soil Science (IUSS). In 2014 he was granted by the Chinese Academy of Science a Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientists.

Dr. Feng Liu is working as an associate professor in soil geography, Department of Soil Resources and Remote Sensing Applications, Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, China. His work on soils started with his PhD thesis on predictive soil mapping over low relief areas such as plains and gently undulating terrains. His research interest and projects focus on this topic. He is a member of the advisory board for the Pedometrics Commission, for the period of 2014-2018. He obtained his MSc degree from the Department of Geography, University of Lanzhou, and his PhD degree from the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He had done one-year soil mapping work as a visiting scholar in the group of Canadian Soil Information System (CanSIS) at Ottawa.

Dr. Xiao-Dong Song is working as an assistant professor in soil geography, Department of Soil Resources and Remote Sensing Applications, Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, China. He completed his PhD in soil science in 2013 at Nanjing Normal University. He was awarded Doctoral National Scholarship in 2013.

Philippe Lagacherie trained as an Agronomist and completed his PhD in soil science in 1992. He obtained his senior scientist degree from Montpellier 2 University in 2002 for his researches on digital soil mapping methods. He is currently senior researcher at INRA Montpellier (France) and lead a research team of the LISAH research unit entitled “spatial structures and dynamics of the cultivated landscapes”. Dr Philippe Lagacherie has been involved in research dealing with Digital Soil Mapping, remote sensing and spatial modelling of cultivated landscapes. He developed spatial approaches that associated field knowledge, GIS, remote sensing, geostatistics, and fuzzy logic. He organised the first international workshop on Digital Soil mapping in Montpellier (2004) and is the co-editor of the first book on Digital Soil Mapping published in 2007. He has conducted several research projects at the crossroad of soil, agronomy and hydrology. Dr Philippe Lagacherie has been nominated in the editorial boards of Geoderma and Int. J. of Earth Observation and Geo-information.

It sparkles! Very highly recommended

Shelves of baby food overwhelm Gunnery Sergeant Sam Pearce. He understands top-secret military maneuvers, but supermarket selections for tikes are beyond his experience. So when old flame Michelle Guillaire spies his dilemma, she quickly steps in with her assistance. Not only does Michelle lend aid and rescue in the supermarket, but while Sam flies to Hawaii to retrieve his twin goddaughters, Michelle also spruces up his house and baby-proofs it.
Sam ingeniously labels the baby's feet with their names to tell them apart when he flies them home from Hawaii, even as he heroically defends them from grouches. Despite his successful transformation to "Sergeant Mom," however, Sam needs help. Once again Michelle volunteers her services, generously providing her babysitting and housekeeping skills. Even as she's liberal with her time, however, Michelle seems incredibly reticent in repairing her relationship with Sam. And now Sam wants to know why.
Author Maureen Child creates a wonderful romance in DID YOU SAY TWINS?! As these twin girls turn the lives of Sam and Michelle upside down, they also provide the impetuous for healing old wounds. Sam's desire to understand the past and Michelle's overachieving in baby preparation result in delightful characterizations that simply sparkle. Once again Child demonstrates her consummate skill at playing upon our deepest emotions with her captivating and endearing tale. This poignant tale of love and laughter comes very highly recommended.

Ki-Gor was the most successful Tarzan knock off. Like Tarzan, he is a white jungle lord in an Africa that bears little resemblance to reality. Ki-Gor is almost always accompanied by his beautiful redheaded bride, Helene, who wears what amounts to a leopard skin bikini, and N'Gesso, a pygmy warrior chief. Ki-Gor tended to meet more exotic foes than did Tarzan. In the first story, "Seven Skulls Of L'Gonda", the trio encounters a tribe of scantily clad Amazons in the midst of a war against a nearby patriarchal tribe. The men of the Amazon's tribe are weak, unimposing vegetarians. Naturally the queen of the Amazons has carnal designs on studly Ki-Gor.
Par for the course Helene falls into the hands of male evil doers. Here is what happens in perhaps the most racy passage in either story, "Instead of tying her to a post, Tykar had a warrior get on either side of Helene and pull outward on her arms. Thus she was held painfully erect, virtually spread eagle in the thin air for it was necessary for her to brace her legs wide to resist the brutal tug of the blacks.
""Strip her!"" commanded Tykar, his narrowed eyes running over her slim figure."

Needless to say our fair maiden is rescued before the metal studded flail begins to work on her sun bronzed white flesh. The second story, "Slave of The Jackal Priestess" is more conventional, with Ki-Gor and friends pushed to the limit by a scheming, legless adventurer and a very sexy, very power hungry black woman. Here Helene is also menaced, primarily by a witch doctor who wants to take Ki-Gor's bride for his own.

What you get out of these stories pretty much depends upon your expectations.If you are a fan of pulp literature, and have a weakness for jungle adventure, these stories will appeal to you. Keep in mind the era in which they were written. In no way what so ever are these stories "politically correct." However, if you can read past casual racist and sexist attitudes, there is much to admire in these compulsively readable tales.

About the Author

Norton Reamer is the former chief investment officer and CEO of Putnam Investments. He founded and for twenty years ran United Asset Management. In 2003, he founded and led Asset Management Finance. Each firm was a leader in its investment approach and organizational structure. He now lives and works in Boston.

Jesse Downing is a graduate of Harvard College, where he studied economics and mathematics. He currently works at an investment-management firm in Boston.

Interesting!

We are all affected by investments, even if we do not necessarily have any spare cash to put away for a rainy day. Investment is not just for individuals, as companies and governments invest as well. This is not a book that will tell you how to invest, even though it may give some insight, but a considered look at the history of investment through the ages. It is by no means a dry read!

Investing was once a privilege of the elite. Many feel that it remains the same today due to global economic conditions, although it is of course more accessible than before and we are much more exposed to investments. The authors take the reader on a tour, showing how investment has developed and became central to everyday life, with its accompanying highs and lows.

It is not a feel-good sort of book where reality has been glossed over. Whilst you can read about how investment has become democratised and more-accessible, you also get to learn in detail about frauds and other manipulation that investors and their investments face. Just prepare to be swamped with information. It is true to say that most people don’t really understand investments and investing and for most any control is a veneer or illusion, since you are hoping to make the least-bad selection from the choices being offered.

The book mixes carefully the need to inform, entertain, enlighten and maybe even shock and does it well. It probably won’t be a book that the general reader rushes towards (more fool them!) although for those who have an interest in a bit of everything, this is going to be a good companion for a few reading sessions.

Should the book not be enough for the reader, the authors have added incredibly copious notes and references for further reading, so that source material can be examined ad infinitum. Accordingly, this book can be a great source of academic indulgence as well. The authors have done well to distil a broad, complex subject into this fairly hefty book, whilst keeping it accessible, interesting and inviting to readers of all types.

Unique and Fascinating Investment Book

Investment: A History deserves a home on every investment professional’s or enthusiast’s bookshelf. Uniquely, it tells the story of how today’s world of investing came to be. It is not a primer per se, like Burton Malkiel’s “Random Walk” though one can find nuggets of sound investment advice. It has a broader sweep than other interesting investment books by the likes of Peter Bernstein and Charles Ellis. As such, it touches on all aspects of investing but from a historian’s perspective.

The book’s principal insight is that over time investing has become more democratic, benefiting society and improving people’s lives, even while creating great wealth for many of its practitioners. While demagogues cavalierly claim the “system” (presumably including the world of investing) has become rigged, the authors’ research suggests otherwise, reminding us where we’ve been and are likely heading.

Some readers may find the book starts a bit slowly with visits to ancient investment practices in Mesopotamia and the Roman Empire. They should persevere! Among other things, they’ll discover the origin of the twenty percent performance fee utilized by hedge and private equity funds. And the book’s pace picks up nicely with its chronicle of industry rogues and the passage of ERISA with its impact on investing for retirement. The chapter on investment theory is written with great clarity, worthy of a Chartered Financial Analyst. The chapter on hedge funds and alternative investment vehicles likewise illuminates an otherwise opaque area of the industry. Each chapter stands alone, making it easy for readers to skip around and focus on their greatest interests.

Norton Reamer has a singular industry vantage point: security analyst, chief investment officer, chief executive officer of public and private asset managers, industry entrepreneur and now historian. Given this experience, I wish he and his co-author had devoted more analysis as to what over time accounts for effective vs. ineffective investment professionals, executives and their firms. With the well-publicized struggles of many active investment managers today, it would be interesting to have their historical perspective here too. But this is a minor quibble in an otherwise fascinating work of history that helps us better understand our world today.

Detailed, but easy to understand history of investments

This was an excellent book highlighting the complex history of investments. The authors do a great job explaining the democratization of investment in relative layman terms.
