Today, more than ever, the use of denial and deception (D&D) is being used to compensate for an opponent's military superiority, to obtain or develop weapons of mass destruction, and to violate international agreements and sanctions. Although the historical literature on the use of strategic deception is widely available, technical coverage of the subject is scattered in hard-to-find and out-of-print sources. This is the first technical volume to offer you a current, comprehensive and systematic overview of the concepts and methods that underlie strategic deception and, more importantly, to provide you with an in-depth understanding of counterdeception. Moreover, this timely book offers you an excellent framework for the development of architectures and systems for deception detection and other countermeasures. You gain an in-depth understanding of the scope and complex nature of the D&D problem, and learn how to plan and organize research and development, system development, and operational activities focused on counterdeception. Further, the book suggests specific technical and organizational approaches to help you detect and defeat the D&D plans and operations of real and potential adversaries

A tour de force on deception!
By Steven Kleinman
The collaboration between Michael Bennett and Edward Waltz has resulted in an unprecedented and systematic examination of deception and counterdeception. For the intelligence, law enforcement, or security professional, this is a "must have" reference. For the general reader, it will provide a uniquely readable and comprehensive overview of a very elusive concept.
While I have spent a considerable portion of my professional career studying the art and science of deception, reading this book from cover to cover was akin to a graduate education in the field. It begins with a solid grounding in the history, fundamental concepts, and key definitions, then delves into an in-depth exploration of the fascinating principles, techniques, and strategies for both deception and counterdeception. The many case studies prove invaluable in illustrating key principles and challenges (and also make the book a joy to read).
It seems that practically any book, especially those seeking to tackle a topic filled with as many complexities as does this one, will have weaknesses or shortfalls (often glaring ones). I am happy to report that I could not find a single discrepancy in this work. Bennett and Waltz clearly invested a great deal of time and thought in mapping out the plan for this manuscript, diligently complied their research, and presented a grand look at an increasingly important, even vital issue. Well done, gentlemen!

Worth every cent
By Danny L. Thoms Jr.
Purchased this book based on my own interest within the arena. Bennett and Waltz take the time to explain the prior uses and how over the years the D&D environment has changed. With the information age well underway this volume is the most up-to-date version I have found. The methods and practices of detection and the use of countermeasures is outstanding and a very good investment for anyone interested in D&D.

Fascinating look at D&D for security
By Ben Rothke
The term "instant classic" is an oxymoron, but it nevertheless may apply to Counterdeception Principles and Applications for National Security. The book is a fascinating look at denial and deception (D&D), and how it can be used to compensate for an opponent's superiority. While the book is written primarily for those in the military and defense sector, it still is of significant relevance to professionals in corporate and general security.
The book provides a comprehensive look at the various methods used in strategic deception and counterdeception. (The military defines counterdeception as the effort to identify enemy deception, then diminish its effect, negate it, or even use it to advantage.)
In nine densely written chapters, the authors explain the inherently complex nature of counterdeception and how to create a system for conducting it. The book also provides numerous technical and organizational methods for detection of D&D operations.
Of specific interest to anyone in corporate security is Chapter 3 titled "The Cognitive Aspects of Deception: Why Does Deception Work?" Many gangs and organized crime syndicates use deception to thwart people attempting to identify them. Investigators often succumb to their own biases--whether they are personal, cultural, or organizational--and in doing so facilitate their own deception by skilled criminals. It can help to become self-aware with regard to these biases.
The book concludes with a chapter on the future of deception and counterdeception. Discussions on topics such as how global information flows and mass media are of both practical interest and global relevance.
The line between national security and corporate security has been blurring for decades. With that, the forward thinking corporate security professional will find Counterdeception Principles and Applications for National Security a fascinating read. Let's hope that for those in the federal sector, this excellent text is review material.
