The fundamental assumption is that before students of English for academic purposes can begin to successfully produce academic writing, they must have the foundations of language in place--the language tools (grammar and vocabulary) they need to build a text. This text offers a compendium of techniques for teaching writing, grammar, and lexis to second-language learners that will help teachers effectively target specific problem areas of students' writing.

Based on the findings of current research, including a large-scale study of close to 1,500 non-native speakers' essays, this book works with several sets of simple rules that collectively can make a noticeable and important difference in the quality of ESL students' writing. The teaching strategies and techniques are based on a highly practical principle for efficiently and successfully maximizing learners' language gains.

Part I provides the background for the text and a sample of course curriculum guidelines to meet the learning needs of second-language teachers of writing and second-language writers. Parts II and III include the key elements of classroom teaching: what to teach and why, possible ways to teach the material in the classroom, common errors found in student prose and ways to teach students to avoid them, teaching activities and suggestions, and questions for discussion in a teacher-training course. Appendices to chapters provide supplementary word and phrase lists, collocations, sentence chunks, and diagrams that teachers can use as needed.

The book is designed as a text for courses that prepare teachers to work with post-secondary EAP students and as a professional resource for teachers of students in EAP courses.

exceptionally well-written, well researched, and comprehensive introduction to teaching academic writing to ELLs

This is an exceptionally well-written and well researched book. If you are new to teaching academic writing to ELL students, I would consider this to be an essential primer. I found this to be an impressively comprehensive introduction to various topics considered in academic writing classes for English Language Learners. The writing style and organization was quite taut and thorough, a delight to read. In addition, it was quite an eye-opener for me; challenging old paradigms and assumptions I had about teaching writing and ELLs. I relished the various highly practical points made by the author on diverse topics such as common academic noun phrases, tricky irregular academic plural nouns, meaning of citation verbs, adverbs and adjectives in academic writing, formal academic word choice, "this" + enumerative phrases, hedging in academic writing, including "two-steps-forward, one-step-back" subordinate adverbial clauses, controversy regarding and legitimate use of the passive voice in academic texts, issues of coherency, including overuse of transition words by beginner ELLs. This book covers the fundamentals of academic writing and with great depth and subtlety.

As an ESL teacher in public schools, I was versed in teaching process writing, encouraging students self-expression and opinion pieces, stressing brainstorming and free-writes, expressive, poetic writing. While process writing has it's moment of truth, Hinkel makes you reconsider the effectiveness of usefulness of the process approach. If your students are entering college, and needing to do college level writing tasks, they would do well to balance process writing tasks with a hefty dose the various topics Hinkel reviews. These specific topics will empower students with discreet tools that will serve them well in the academic world as well as business and everyday tasks they will face upon graduating.

I should also mention another invaluable lesson of this this text. Unlike the "natural approach" to language that posits that students best learn a language by simply listening and using the language in meaningful natural contexts in the community, Hinkel notes that academic language is unique genre of English, with it's own conventions, which are not simply picked up by watching TV or listening to people speak in the supermarket. Hinkel stresss that these conventions are abstract, and formal and need to be explicitly taught. They will not be simply assimilated or acquired as in Krashen's "natural approach" to language acquisition, but require explicit attention, with focused lessons, requiring discussion and reflection and exercises that allow for repeated practice in order to master the new target language. The author cites compelling sound research to support various positions laid out in the book. This book had a profound affect on the way I teach English. I read it cover to cover, mesmerized and intrigued.
