Q. Online advertising online has become the dominant force in the world of advertising, as you explain in the book. Having been on the front lines of this seismic shift, what do you think is the most important data businesses should be looking at in order to get the most return on their online ads?

A. The most important data will tell you exactly what an individual customer wants and needs at a particular moment in time. The most valuable data about these customers will have three attributes. It will be very predictive of a customer’s needs and wants, it will be scarce and it will be recent. The last – recency – is increasingly important. Data ages very quickly in some categories. Knowing that a customer is looking to buy a red dress now is much more valuable than knowing she was looking for one a month ago.

Q. In the book you talk about the Gaus Theory, which says that if you know what people search for, and how that changes over time, this could potentially lead to a barometer of society’s mental state. How has this approach to gleaning consumer insights via search patterns matured over time, and why is it so important now?

A.The best indication of what someone is looking for is their search behavior; customers are actually telling you what they are looking for. Search data is can also give you an idea of what language customers are using, which can give you pointers as to how to talk about your products and services in all media.

Q. In Chapter Six, you mention that, at one time, your clients were very excited that “everything is measurable!” Yet you note that when everything is measurable, companies need to have a way to distinguish what you should measure and what you shouldn’t. How have your clients dealt with this challenge?

A.I still see a lot of companies drowning in numbers. This is because they have not spent enough time planning for measurement. In the book I describe a very simple process we use with clients to help them figure out what they should measure. It starts with a conversation around what the goals are, then we tend to craft measurement plans using those goals as a starting point.

Q. You also discuss how UPS sought to strengthen their brand and provide more services for small and medium businesses and how, by embracing the word ‘logistics,’ you were able to build a new campaign for UPS. What was the best way to measure the success of the campaign?

A. We tend to measure these types of campaigns in various stages. Before the campaign launches, it can be tested in research. Then when the campaign launches, the first results we usually see are how audiences engage on the digital assets of the campaign. But these digital metrics rarely give a complete picture of the campaign’s performance. Ultimately campaigns need to be judged based on the objectives they set out to achieve and they are rarely visits to a landing page or click through rates on a banner. They are usually to drive brand awareness or recognition, to change brand perception and ultimately to sell more products. For UPS we also looked at the impact the logistics campaign had on key brand attributes and we linked it back to sales. We thereby not only understood how customers engaged with the campaign, we also got a good read of whether the campaign drove the outcomes we set out to achieve.

Q. In your final chapter, you say that marketing, research, and advertising are all on their way to being automated. Is this really the future of the industry and if so, what is the most important thing companies need to do to adapt?

A.Not all of marketing, research and advertising will be automated. But a lot of the analytics and number crunching will be. Companies will then be able to differentiate themselves by adopting the insights from the analytics and acting upon them. This should be the main focus area for most companies going forward.

Q. These days, “data mining” and “big data” have gotten a bit of a bad rap, as privacy advocates have become increasingly vocal about what they see as the insidious effects of companies knowing too much about our habits, buying patterns, and personal data. Are the practices you advocate in this book an invasion of privacy? And given that these practices will only become more and more widespread, what steps can concerned consumers take to safeguard their personal information?

A.Today’s privacy debate is a bit of a lightning rod, rightly so. Consumers are very concerned about the data companies are collecting and how that impacts their privacy. However, 99.5% of all practices are not malicious. And where there has been abuse in the past, the industry has very quickly self-regulated. Government is also working on legislation and I strongly believe that in the very near future the appropriate legislation and guidance frameworks will be in place to make people more comfortable with the entire issue. Then the focus will shift from the negative to the positive – from the fear of companies gathering personal information to the opportunity for consumers to get better products and services from these companies based on them having access to my data.

The biggest insights in the simplest language

Dimitri is able to give us sharp insights into some of the most strategic and complex issues that businesses face given the influx of seemingly endless volumes of data. He does so using real cases studies in plain English with simple, strategic frameworks that make the insights intelligible and relevant. It all adds up to making the book a fascinating read that lives up to its title!

The prose doesn't flow all that well. The anecdotes are arranged all wrong. It's extremely dense with information. I keep having to put it down.

Don't bother

Many of the references in this book are to British culture. The ideas are ridiculous and either made up by the author, or they are recycled old riddles. The author writes, "I do not mean to suggest that the situations, once explained, will seem realistic in everyday-world terms..." Well, he's right. You won't solve these, not because you aren't smart enought, but because you won't care after the first one.

Example (paraphrased): Why did the sexual product industry experienced an uptick in sales in WWII? Answer: The army bought all of the blow-up dolls and dressed them as paratroopers to throw the Germans off.

Picked this one up at a second hand book sale. Some of the puzzles are quite good, some are recycled oldies (like the town with only two barbers), some are adaptions of real-life events--which is annoying if you're not familiar with them--and some have clearly been made up by the author. The latter group is easy to identify - look for contrived situations and/or awkward stabs at humour. Still, a bit of fun for a quiet evening if you let someone else ask yes/no questions; more entertaining than Solitaire but less than Go Fish.

As a Psychology PhD & a parent, I struggle with some parenting books. Not this one. Loved it.

While I am PhD in the field of child Psychology, I am first and foremost a parent of young children. I own, have read, and have reviewed many books on parenting and child development. However, the parent in me has sighed (ok rolled my eyes) at the occasional parenting book, the professional scientist in me has rejected other parenting books outright, and...for a few other parenting books...the clinician in me has thought "My (parent) clients don't have the time or patience to read this lengthy and verbose, yet fabulous, book."

It was a great experience not to have any of the above reactions. While reading Discipline Without Damage, my reaction was "Finally - someone has managed to intelligently synthesize the science and practicallities all together, in an amusing, accessible fashion," with some subtle twists. This book will appeal to parents interested in intentional and attachment-based parenting, but also parents who utilize limit setting and more structured approaches.

From my research, clinical, and personal perspective, a child's emotional- and self-regulation is critical for their relationships and their future success. Children who can be co-regulated by self-regulated parents in a loving, firm, and secure fashion will grow up to be independent, successful and connected adults (who hopefully are still involved with their parents and healthier relationships across the lifespan). So - perhaps the greatest value of Dr. Lapointe's book ---- it translates what we know as scientists into real scenarios, helpful verbal phrases, and simple actions that parents can take to co-regulate and connect to their children. I confess, some of her suggested parenting expressions "just seem to connect to my children (and husband)'s limbic-emotional brains" better than my own. Equally, it also shares practical strategies for us as parents to self-regulate in challenging parent-child situations.

A must read for all parents & professionals working with children

I have worked with children for over 10 years and now have a wee one of my own and have been waiting for a book like this to come out forever. It's filled with 'ah-ha' moments, relatable experiences and lots of powerful messages that can have such a huge impact on the daily challenging moments. Discipline without damage is an essential resource and gift for us all, it definitely has provided me with more confidence and I'm so excited about the impact this book has on so many generations.

As an Infant Development Consultant, I have had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Lapointe, attending many of her workshops and I have also sought her support on my own parenting journey. I am always moved by Dr. Lapointe's commitment to children and their "big people". After reading Discipline without Damage, I am once again in awe. Dr. Lapointe not only understands the science behind child development and the importance of connection, she "sees it, feels it, and IS it". I am empowered to continue having connection my number one goal as a parent and professional. I will definitely be adding Discipline Without Damage to my "must have" resources.

Excellent reference book, lousy primary textbook for courses, does not include epidemiologic statistics

I hated this book (first edition) as a text in grad school because it did not go through derivations or explain any of the background where all the formulas came from. Then the second edition turned out to be an extremely useful reference book when doing research and actually using the various statistical procedures. I am an epidemiologist but also do other types of statistical analyses. The many examples are very helpful if you have a dataset that is similar enough. The book covers a broad range of statistical procedures, not including epidemiologic statistics such as incidence, prevalence, relative risk/rate, Odds Ratios, Cox Proportional Hazards regression, Poisson regression. I have bought and used all 4 of the previous editions over the years and Zar has become the first book I look at when trying to decide which procedures are appropriate for the data at hand (non-epidemiologic data). From a quick perusal of the 5th edition, I still would hate to have to learn this stuff from this book, I need to go through the derivations and assumptions in detail to really learn, and deriving proofs of even the simplest procedures from the sketchy descriptions in this book is very difficult or impossible for me. I much prefer the approach of Hogg and Craig, Breslow and Day and other more mathematically detailed books that outline derivations and show the curious reader where the formulas and procedures come from and what assumptions need to be made for them to be valid. In fairness, Zar is well referenced so you can often find an article or book that does provide more mathematical detail. So the 4 stars is a weighted average of 5 stars for usability as a reference text and 2 stars for the usefulness of this book as a primary textbook when first learning the material. Also, the book title implies coverage of epidemiologic statistics, which are not covered at all.
Incidentally, I ordered the hardcover version new and it arrived in terrible condition. The binding was separated from the cover in both front and back. I could not find the option to call Amazon for customer service to request a replacement so I mentioned this complaint in my review, but have not factored it into the 4 star rating.
ADDENDUM: With a little searching of the website, I finally found the customer service line for Amazon, called them, re-examined the damaged binding and now believe the book actually was damaged in shipping. On closer examination, the binding does appear to be of reasonable quality but it seems the book was dropped on its open side which tore the binding at both front and back covers. Amazon offered me a partial refund to compensate for the damage to the book, which I believe is a fair amount. I will repair the binding myself, which I prefer to the hassle of returning the book and getting a replacement sent. Five stars for Amazon's response to this problem.

Excellent Book

Supplier: Prompt and received well ahead of schedule!

Book: This is a classic. Some stated that it was high level, but I didn't see it that way. He provides great examples with good details on the exact calculations. One should be able to perform all calculations with any usual calculator or spreadsheet. He does not delve into any derivations or higher level math such as derivatives and integrals. In fact, the entire book is very practical.

This book covers from Biostatistics approach which means that there is more dealing with the nonparametric side and more dealing with metrics for species, diseases, etc. not usually found in statistical texts. He covers that same areas as the usual texts, but adds better examples, detail calculations and includes good interpretations. The emphasis was more on "use" rather than subtle statistical basics for the methods.

One of the great features was inclusion of Circular Statistics, which to date his is the only one I've come across that actually provides great coverage of this area. This is not covered in any texts that I've owned, except the original works by Mardia. And the examples are very good in how to use and applications. This area is surprisingly encountered more often than not and is always overlooked. I would buy this book just for that section alone. In fact this approach solves a lot of those periodic, seasonal variation problems I ran across in industry.

Overall, he covers the usual stats, adds a lot of features (similarity, diversity, various indices, etc.), covers "random", added chapters on circular, added "intraclass correlation" which is also overlooked, and still covers the basic stats that all need to know. It's more like a "handbook" with great examples, and does not approach from a Math-Stat-Must Derive Foundation from Theorems. Sometimes all we want to do is solve the problem, understand the assumptions included in the method, and not dwell on deriving and interpreting or deriving from some high level, fundamental theorem. I've always hated "theorem-speak" where they provide 2 theorems, 5 corollaries, and then hand you a practical problem to solve (where the derivation of the connection between theory and application was "left to the student!" -- my major was not math; but in sciences sometimes you just need to use the methods correctly and do not need to carry all the deriviations. I think that when I see the methods in a rep. text, I found that I can usually trust the integrity of the authors. Past that point, I just need to apply the methods and not make mistakes.)

I started with 2nd ed, bought the 3rd and 4th. I don't see that the 5th offered much more than the 4th. And the price of the 4th (because the 5th is out there) is reasonable. This is one of the standard texts I keep in my library; I will be getting rid of some of those standard texts.

Excellent high-school level statistics text requiring only a basic background in Algebra-2/pre-Calculus

The text is a bit dry, formulaic and encyclopedic - but thorough in what it covers with good examples and tables. It also requires minimal background in science and mathematics. I have used it as a reference to bone up on statistical inference and some of the basic methodology used in clinical trials, medicine and genetics.

Like: The price was just a couple of bucks - well worth it for a reference and much cheaper than the ink and paper used in an ink jet. Good for us old-timers who prefer written texts over ebooks.
Dislike: I personally prefer more sophisticated treatments that are more suitable for physics, physical sciences and engineering. I would not recommend purchasing the newest edition for which the cost increases by 100x.
It is well-suited for all levels of education and fields requiring only high-school algebra II/pre-calculus, and non-mathematically intensive areas, specifically in biology, health-science, nursing and/or medicine. It is also of value for business, economics, and as an aid for data analysis in general. It may be of some value as background material for information/communication theory, statistical mechanics/optics,etc.
