Small pictures, bad angles

I wanted to love this book, since Crawford has almost no good reference books about her work. Unfortunately this one doesn't cut it. The pictures are often annoyingly small thanks to the willfully airy layouts, and you get very few shots of each space. Moreover, most seem to be the cheaper-to-license images that weren't even used in magazine spreads and publicity shots, so they're frequently worse than other images floating around on the Internet. Overall, this book privileges words over images, which just isn't what I was looking for. A search of Ilse Crawford on Pinterest yields much better content.

Enjoyable Enough

Nice pictures, but expected better content and more detailed pictures. Would not use as a reference book on decorating, but it was enjoyable for viewing rooms.

It's about finding what's best for the way you live

How surprised I was to find that I had ordered a third book by Ilse Crawford. I hadn't been looking at the author. While it may seem, at first, that this book is about Ilse or her clients -- it is really about YOU. As it says, it is a "frame for life" -- and she shows you how to make a frame for your life. So while I would not design my home as she designed hers, I find the book valuable. That's her point -- design your space, your home, for YOU. It's not about coping her style. It's about finding what's best for the way you live. Her other books I have pondered are: Home is Where the Heart Is, and The Sensual Home. In all these books, the text is as delightful as the photos and the photos are as instructive as the text.

The search for such matches can be supported through the computational process of bisimulation. This approach is used to de?ne the semantics of s- eral languages, including graphical languages, such as G-Log and GraphLog, semistructuredinformationlanguages,suchasLorel,andtemporallanguages, such as TSS-QL. Both graph-based approaches and bisimulation had been used by previous authors for de?ning query languages and their semantics; however, this work goes well beyond previous approaches by integrating and re?ning these techniques into a ?exible and powerful paradigm that Elisa demonstrates to be e?ective on a spectrum of languages and a suite of alt- native semantics.

Are you comfortable with books that make you think?

When I was 9 I was finally moved up to the advanced reading group in my class. In order to catch up, I had to read Harriet the Spy in its entirety over Thanksgiving break. I was extremely dismayed, I had never even seen a book so big, much less read one! But, I devoured it in two days. I didn't live in New York and I had never kept a journal, but everything that happened in the book was completely familiar. It was, I think, the first work of literature I had ever read on my own.

Skip ahead 14 years. I reread this book in my local library on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I loved it, but I can understand the qualms expressed by some parents about the book The question is: What is the point of having children read - is it to present them with 2-dimensional models of correct behavior, or else to provoke their thinking, reasoning, and analytical skills? I think it's very telling that a reviewer who gave this book one star literally threw it into the fireplace - this is the type of book that people who hate books burn.

People criticize Harriet for being rude or mean, but I think they are a little off base there. Harriet is a smart 11 year old, but she is an 11 year old just the same. Assigning adult motives and value judgments to her behavior is flat-out unfair. She's just a kid, and this is how kids behave, not when you're around, but on the playground and in the classroom where they are discovering peer interaction.

In fact, this is a very moral story. Harriet learns that there are reasons for lying - it isn't being hypocritical (as adults often do seem to children) but rather to spare other peoples' feelings - sometimes it's better to be kind than to be truthful. Watch the way Harret interacts with her friend Sport: she learns for the first time to show consideration for other peoples' feelings - not because you will get punished, but because they will get hurt, and you do not want to hurt the people you care about, even though so often you inadvertently do. This is a complicated message that the target audience (kids 9-12) are learning IN REAL LIFE which is why the book resonates with so many readers of that age (and beyond).

Harriet and the Night-Time Sky

When I was ten years old, my teacher was Mrs Stanley.
Mrs Stanley (like all great teachers) refused to teach us what she was told to teach us. Instead she taught us what she felt we ought to know. One of the things she felt we ought to know was "Harriet the Spy."
Harriet the Spy is Harriet M. Welsh, a little girl who keeps a notebook in which she writes thoughts and observations about her friends and the people around her. She also has a spy route made up of six or seven houses she passes on the way to and from school each day. She writes about the houses on her spy route in the notebook each day also.
As a kid, you can understand the desire to peer in windows and you can share Harriet's frustration with grown-ups, what they say, what they don't say, all that. As a kid, you share the sense of isolation visited upon Harriet when her notebook falls out of her bag and is read by all the people in her class. You also share the good times and the laughs, of which there are many, with her. When you are a kid, you read "Harriet the Spy" and it's the story of a little girl whose world falls apart for a little while and then appears to be on the mend.
Years later, I read the book again (sort of glimpsed through half-closed eyes, thinking: this will not be as good as I remembered). You know what? It is every bit as good reading the book as a (so-called) adult as it was reading the book as a kid. Since then I get through "Harriet the Spy" at least once a year. It has become a kind of tradition with me. My little girl is even named after her.
"Harriet the Spy" is a golden classic. There are not many books like this. The five star rule goes out of the window. Other books you can measure with stars. Harriet the Spy is like the night-time sky. There are too many stars to count.

There's a girl who leads a life of danger

I have a theory about "Harriet the Spy". I suspect that no adult that read this book once (and only once) as a child remembers it correctly. For example, if you had asked me, prior to rereading it, what the plot of "Harriet the Spy" was, I could have summed it up like so: Harriet the Spy is about a girl who wants to be a spy. She spies on lots of different people and writes in a notebook, but one day all her friends read the notebook and none of them like her anymore. That is the plot of "Harriet the Spy". And I would be half right. Surprising to me, I found I was forgetting much much more.
In truth, "Harriet the Spy" is about class, loss, and being true to one's own self. Harriet M. Welch (the M. was her own invention) is the daughter of rather well-to-do socialites. Raised by her nurse Ole Golly until the ripe old age of eleven, Harriet must come to terms with Ole Golly's eventual abandonment. Ole Golly marries and leaves Harriet to her own devices just as the aforementioned tragedy involving her friends and the notebook occurs. The combination of the nurse's disappearance from Harriet's life (leaving behind such oh-so helpful pieces of advice as, "Don't cry", and the like) and the subsequent hatred directed at Harriet by her former friends makes Harriet into a veritable she-devil. A willful child from the start (punishments are few and far between in the Welch family) Harriet slowly spirals downward until a helpful note from Ole Golly gives her the advice she needs to carry on.
So many things about this book appeal to kids. The realistic nature of peer interactions is one. Harriet randomly despises various kids, even before her notebook is read. After making their lives terrible, she eventually has to experience what they themselves have had to deal with. Author Louise Fitzhugh is such a good writer, though, that even as you disapprove of Harriet's more nasty tendencies you sympathize with her. Honestly, who would want ink dumped down their back? As Harriet observes various people on her spy route, she writes her observations about them as well as about life itself. She hasn't quite figured out the differences between her life and the life of her best friend Sport (the son of an impoverished irresponsible writer) though she does briefly ponder if she herself is rich (the fact that she has her own private bath, nurse, and family cook never quite occurs to her). On the whole, the book contains a multitude of wonderful characters. Harriet's parents are both amusing and annoying, completely dedicated to their daughter and completely clueless about her needs. I was especially shocked by a section of the book in which Harriet asks her mother if she'll be allowed to eat dinner with her parents that night. Gaah!
Accompanying the text are Fitzhugh's own meticulous line drawings. They're fantastic and eerie. Combined with this timeless story (timeless in all the good ways) the book deserves its status as one of the best books for children. Read it again to remember. You'll find a whole lot more than you bargained for.

This book will change your mind about investing

Along with the latest edition of Charles Ellis's book (Winning the Loser's Game : Timeless Strategies for Successful Investing), Larry Swedroe's book will drive you away from actively managed mutual funds and toward passively managed index (and more sophisticated asset-class allocation) funds. Swedroe builds a convincing case, not only by marshaling the extensive academic evidence showing that active stock pickers do not persistently beat their passive benchmarks over time, but also by demonstrating that you CAN beat the "market" by allocating your passive investments to achieve the optimal return for the risk you are willing to bear. He also provides specific portfolio recommendations for several standard risk levels. My only criticism is that this book -- like nearly all investment books with the exception of Ellis's -- is so heavily padded with anecdotal fluff that it interferes with a reader's capacity to grasp the essentials quickly. Even so, the book is well worth the price. It may permanently alter the way you think about investing.

Swedroe is one of very few honest folks in the business

I read this and his first book. It changed the way I invest completely. There is far too much conflicting interests on Wall Street. From Wall St Houses, Mutual Funds, Investment advisors, analyst, on and on. They are all driven by getting a share of your investment dollars - performance is secondary. (Just look at returns from the mutual funds and the fees they charge - it is criminal). Passive management is so logical. Especially when so few of these advisors and funds EVER beat indexes on a consistent basis. Swedroe's books are both excellent. The second devotes more time to asset allocation - which is important even in a passive management structure.

Better than the title

I normally shun investment books with superlatives in the title. However, this one is worth the read. It is not the ONLY investment book you will ever need, but it is a well-written evidence-based outline of the investment strategy I had arrived at through other studies. Combine this with Bogle, Ellis, O'Shaughnessy, and Siegel for a solid approach to long term investing.

Collection of great ideas; merits a slight caution

I'm an enormous fan of Rosenblatt's ideas, but this book cannot be recommended unconditionally for anybody who would find themselves considering a purchase of it.

The majority of this volume is composed of very similar essays that go over many of the same ideas: comparisons of "efferent" and "aesthetic" reading, discussion of the transactional relationship at play between reader and text, and elaboration of the challenges and responsibilities of teaching literature.

Particularly if you've read The Reader, The Text, The Poem, most of this book will be very familiar. Unless you already know that something in this volume will be specifically useful to you, you're likely better off reading Literature as Exploration and/or The Reader, The Text, The Poem. (The former is a higher-level view of her ideas, particularly how they fit into a classroom... the latter is arguably more technical.)

I will say, however, that one particularly helpful use of this book could be assigning one or more of its essays to undergraduates to introduce them to Rosenblatt's transactional theory of reading. While unfortunately repetitive to read one after the other, many of these essays are concise explanations of her excellent ideas.

Definitely buy this one

With the astronomical cost of textbooks, I often rent many of mine. Some I buy because I think the book will be useful in the future, or for other classes. This is a must buy. There is a wealth of information in this book. So much that I probably could have used it for my Basic Micro, Clinical Micro, Parisitology and Bacteriology and Virology classes. One book for 5 classes! The writing is good and focused on high-value information. You don't need to read 20 pages to get what you need out of a section. There are some sections that need some work, such as the section on Borrelia. But overall a very good book that is well worth the investment. You'll be using it as a reference for years to come.

The reading flows and offers great insight from a microbiology perspective. I like it because it goes into just enough detail and doesn't over elaborate on subjects.

Coming of Age Meets Middle Age

Unlike other reviews, I don't really know the scoop on her relationship with Jude Law. Nor did I buy the book for that, I really bought it becuase she was a bit of an It girl for the late 80's-90's with her relationship with Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) and in Coppola's Dracula. The book is good and full of little nuggets about other celebs (Kate Moss, Gavin Rossdale,Carl Barat from the Libertines) but it's not very reflective. She tells the story of her hippie/artist parents (with 9+ step-siblings), being on her own since 16 and it's easy to see how her upbringing has played a role in her adult relationships. However, she rarely attributes insight or emotion or explains her behaviour. It would be a more interesting book if she did. It's a quick read and enjoyable and made me like her (rather than envy her).

A sad but honest story

My introduction to Sadie Frost was Bram Stoker's Dracula in November 1992. Upon seeing the movie I was instantly smitten with her beauty in the role of the doomed Lucy Westenra. I bought the Making Of book, the expensive Criterion laserdisc, soundtrack, novels, etc. I even had a poster of Sadie in her vamped out form on my bedroom wall. I've been a fan of hers ever since. My fave roles of hers are Dracula (hard to watch the film now without cringing at the awful dialogue and subpar performances by Keanu and Winona. Only the British actors are good.), The Cisco Kid, and Pyromaniac's Love Story (got the poster too). Up until this book's publication, I knew very little about Sadie's early life. And, now that I've read her autobiography, I can't help but feel sorry for her. Such a terrible childhood. I know exactly what it's like to have a chronically angry father. Mine was pretty bad too. It's amazing to read Sadie still found the ability to still love such a monster after witnessing such anger and abuse to her family. I also had no idea she had a bad lung. And her manic depression? I know what that's like too. I've struggled with it all my life. I hope and pray I don't turn into my father either.

Yes, I quite enjoyed this autobiography. I read a lot of celebrity bios, but this one seemed one of the more honest. Letting everything out on the line can be truly painful, but also very therapeutic at the same time. My only complaint would be: I wish she wrote more about her various films. Barely mentions them at all. Only the pivotal ones that helped her breakthrough. I like the stuff on how she got the Dracula role, especially the "shaving" bit. Hilarious.

As a movie geek, I enjoyed this book. Not a masterpiece, but I certainly found it enlightening. You think you know everything about someone from all the headlines, but that's not always true. How little I knew about this one.

"Nighty night. Sleep tight. Don't let the bedbugs bite."

From one author (I wrote the forthcoming LA noir novel MACGUFFIN) to another (Sadie Frost)... chin up, stand tall, keep moving forward, and never look back.

After reading her book I feel like I have a special relationship with her

I'm a big Jude Law fan and always wanted to know more about his former wife, who I always admired and cherished. After reading her book I feel like I have a special relationship with her, like I know her well. She is an amazing woman who suffered far too much and this books just shows how great she is. Also a good book to read if you deal with depression, as Sadie explains how her mental illness impacted her life. Good read!

Planning for Indonesia vacation

This English-Indonesian dictionary is a great book to further my knowledge of the Indonesian language, or as it is called in Indonesia, bahasa Indonesia. I have some smaller books on learning the language, but they only have common words and phrases, but this English-Indonesian Dictionary has nearly every word in English that a person could possibly need and has the Indonesian word(s) for it in very descriptive terms. I am planning a great adventure to Indonesia and self-teaching the language. I purchased this book as a "used" item, but when I received it, it was in new condition. Had I not known that I purchased a "used" book, I would have just assumed it to be new, it was in such great condition. Thanks to Amazon and thanks to the seller. Great job!! This is a dissapointing book, the manufacturing and paper is of the lowest quality. I sent mine back. The print is small and not very legible.

Founder and Principal of The English Gardening School at the Chelsea Physic Garden, London, Rosemary Alexander writes and lectures worldwide on garden design. She has worked on a wide range of gardens throughout the world. For eleven years she was tenant of the National Trust property, Stoneacre, in Kent, where she created a romantic, old world garden. She now lives in Hampshire where she has made a new garden.

Excellent for even experienced landscape professionals

I am using this book as a textbook for a Garden Design class. I have several years of garden design experience and have many more years of gardening experience. This book explains the design process in an easy to understand and inspiring way. I have found that it addresses planting and design in subtley different ways that jog my mind to be more creative. It is well written, well designed and very informative.

Individual chapters deftly cover necessary research and preparations, how to develop the initial design, what to take into account when finalizing the garden layout plan, creating a planting plan, visualizing and constructing the design, and a host of minor details. The Essential Garden Design Workbook is highly recommended as a detailed instructional for learning to blend individually creative instincts with practical necessities to create truly memorable gardens.

Great for Beginners

I moved into a new house and needed to do something with the landscaping. It is a mess. I cannot afford to hire a professional, so I bought this book hoping it would help me come up with a plan on my own. I haven't finished the book yet, but am finding it very helpful. It is more like a text book on how to draw up a garden plan, aimed at professionals, but it isn't overly technical and is fairly informative. I would have given it 5 five stars except that I am not very artistic, and I wish the book had more info to help me in that regard.
